She played Chinese ball for 1 year and Russian ball for 8 years, in the WNBA offseason. I would say she is familiar with international drug laws, and punishments. I do find it odd that she chose to spend 15 years in the gulag.

I haven't looked into it much. Did she legitimately break the law in a foreign country? Did she know she was breaking the law in a foreign country?
If the answer to both of those is "Yes", then no special efforts should be made on her behalf. I assure you if this was some random-arse US citizen like me or you we would have barely heard a peep about this. There are Americans locked up in jails and prisons all over the world for breaking laws in foreign countries. If you make a special effort for her, you damn well better make it for them all.
