I work in telco, outside plant. It's pretty good work, but I'd do electrical if I had the chance for a do-over. That or hvac. Neither is going away anytime soon, and it's a damn lucrative career if you start early.
I've got one teen who is off-the-charts smart, and we'll encourage him to pursue college and post-graduate. I've got another who is As and Bs but generally lackadaisical/apathetic about school. I'll be nudging that one towards a trade if college gives him any issue at all.
I'd be winding towards retirement myself (mid-40s) if I had taken that route out of high school instead of 10 years of college, graduate school, doctorate, student loans, 1099s, teaching, etc., all before finally heading off to the telephone company a few years ago.

See the Forrest through the trees. Staying in college will payoff 10 fold over those 3 years of income.

Mechatronics Technology. Silly name, but someone has to build and repair the robots that will eventually replace most of us.

Instrumentation and analyzer technician. Start at $28/hour and eventually get on at a plant and have it made.

You Louisiana baws with your plants/factories. There's no way I could work inside every day.

have him lay off the mary jane for a month, then go down to the AF recruiter and sign up for bio medical repair, if he doesn't qualify for BMET in the AF, then try the Urmy.

Yes, encourage him to take on massive amounts of debt so he too can work at H&R Block making 45k.
You can make that at Lowe’s with a high school education.

They would be outside most of the day checking and calibrating devices. It would be active but not labor intensive at all. Maybe have to work in the weather at times, but that would be the worst of it.

31k x 5 = 155k.
You lost money?
Haha

Electricians are going to be in high demand nationally in the next 5-7 years and the money they will be able to command will be very good especially on the commercial side with IBEW types. Also followed by HVAC.

You can make 70k and get to 100k quicker than that in accounting or engineering.

Fair enough. Even going to the same complex every day would wear on me.
