No its not. Also, for this to be true we wouldn't be living in the safest time in modern history like we currently are.
While murder is not as commonplace, national coverage of these horrific crimes and murder in general was much less common. Most news was local and, though there had been a significant uptick in crime over the later half of the decade, most people still though of their local community as safe. These crimes were certainly more shocking to the American psyche then than they would be now.
Perception trumps reality more often than not.
