I despise the religion of Islam, but I can't help think it has a point concerning the West. We are decadent, immoral people who have abandoned religion for secularism. Instead of worshiping God on Sunday, we worship the state. Instead of listening to hymns composed by the likes of Handel, Ken, and Newton we instead turn to the likes of Cardi B for our spiritual enrichment.

That’s fine and dandy, but there is mounting evidence that some people possibly do need that community.

There is little to nothing under the sun that is not political in the age of mass media, the internet, and the nation-state. Whether or not you like it, politics is interested in you regardless of whether you are interested in it.

Yeah let's ask medieval Europe and the middle east about how well they benefited. The damn Catholic Church nearly conquered all of Europe
Open your eyes to 2021 man. Seriously.

Thankfully I can totally blame the Catholic hierarchy. I’m Protestant. Yeah, they were more power hungry than consistently Christian.

I think even nonbelievers would admit to the facts of that verse.

That decline is in line with the rapid downfall of society. Not a coincidence. I can understand people not being frequent church goers or even only praying when they’re in need but how so many people nowadays can be so anti-religion and anti-God is mind boggling to me. People need to get right with God before their time comes. I don’t judge them but I do pray for their “ah ha” moment to arrive sooner than later.

My point was that religion itself didn't make people moral it was society itself advancing and progressing that changed things.

60 years ago far more people attended church but at the same time you had people not able to vote due to their race.

No clearly somebody here already know what a "good" person is anyways. They must have their own definition of good handy they've formulated or a scientifically researched and proven "good" inside of a person.

The two are inseparable.

Even a nominally secular person who argues and effects change is doing so from what can easily be understood as a religious impulse - regardless of whether it came from an ancient text or a humanistic understanding.

I'm not arguing saying religion is automatically the answer but explain to me what purpose "morality" even plays in society?

People fall back on the “Crusades” as their answer to their Atheism/Agnosticism. It’s a pretty good testimony to Christianity if they have to go that far back in time.

If you knew how many of those goat-frickers grew up hammering young boys in the rear while “praying” five times a day you might have a change of heart.

Just sayin

No they aren't you don't need religion to be a good person. You can realize that hurting others is bad without some God telling you it isn't. Human decency is not religious

You can't even define "good" . It's just an arbitrary word you throw out there.

I am not suggesting one needs *this* or *that* religion to be a good, decent person, but rather that whatever impulse that causes one to behave in such a manner is what drives religious thought in the first place. We will create systems of morality regardless. You can throw whatever kind of mythos on top of it to give it a unique flair, but in the end it is just an innate human behavior.

Because there are no more Christian theocracies. Before western society advanced past the idea that a country was supposed to serve a God there was countless deaths in the name of Christianity.

Sitting in the wings of my Methodist church years ago at one of my child’s christening-full sanctuary my father was sitting directly behind me. Not a member of my church and not the most religious guy he looked around and made a rather loud observation.

“Jesus Christ son, there are a lot of God Damn sinners in here today.”

While everyone stared at us in disbelief, I had to chuckle and admit, the old man was right.
