It has more to do with latinos (in this case mexicans) feeling like we only appreciate the parts of their culture that coincide with our own leisure ie cinco de mayo.

I used to live in an apartment complex full of Hondurans. They fricking loved Cinco de Mayo. They would invite me to their parties. I would always go, because there was no way I could sleep through their racket. Got hammered with some pretty cool people.
