I loved college. Worked at a HVAC supply house and made decent college money. Seems like i always had cash then.
I worked an internship my last summer and had enough cash to take my last semester off and go to school and play golf.

But I always lived within my means

I was so poor in college I bought cases of Billy Beer.
I had a change jar and collected change to pay for my gas.
I worked full time at night and my wife worked full time at a hospital.
My senior year I bought a 4 bedroom house that was trashed.
My girlfriend now my wife and I saved to fix up a room at a time and to buy a hot water heater.
I saved for an engagement ring and my girlfriend now wife took that money form my hiding spot to buy a couch and zenith color tv with it.

Kroger chicken pot pies 5 for $1. Used to cAnvas class buildings at night for “lost” textbooks and sell them back to the student bookstore for beer money

Thankfully The Net's promise of pizza ordering via computer had come to fruition. Too damn bad the Starkville Pizza Hut was slow as frick (2 hours for a freaking pizza? No tip!) Us late 90s baws had it pretty good. If I was in the mood for pizza I'd call my parents on the other side of the country and ask them to order me a pizza.
My suite packed into my Taurus on Wednesdays and we'd hit up Sonic 3 burgers for $1. They'd always screw up the order so we left pickles, onions, scraped off mayo almost every week for the birds. Tuesday's were $1 footlong chili dogs. And I think Mondays were 50 cent corn dogs...which I'm sure you LSU baws loved. Then 50 cent soft taco Sundays at Taco Bell...spent $5 for them with no lettuce, spent a couple bucks at Jitney and had 3 meals. Tried ramen once out of curiosity and didn't have it again until my 30s.
I closest I came to beyond desperate is having to drive on fumes from West Point to campus the afternoon before my financial aid check hit my account. A/C was out in my car and was afraid windows down would kill gas mileage... most miserable 15 minutes of my life.

Wasn't college but relative. In 2011 during divorce and bankruptcy I was delivering pizza as a second/night job. There were a few times where I'd take the closing shift to make as much as possible and go straight to the Chase atm after I got off at 1130 to deposit the $50-60 in tips to not overdraft at midnight when my kids' tuition draft would hit. I'd get to bed about 1am and then up for work at my real job for 530am. This went on for 4 yrs.
I'll be damned if I'm ever in a situation like that again and I'll also never forget what it felt like

I can remember mixing up a Slim Fast shake for breakfast and then filling up my belly with water from the fountain right before I went in to every class so my stomach wouldn't growl and then squirming until class was over because I had to pee so bad. I'd run to the restroom to pee and then repeat the water fountain - piss cycle until it was time to go to work and then drink break room coffee the rest of the day. Good times. There was a couple years where I survived on Slim Fast, water, caffeine & Skoal. Except for payday Friday when I sprung for a 12 pack of Keystone Light or if it was a particularly good week a bottle of Mellow Bourbon.

I had a campus job, a night job in a restaurant, and sold plasma twice a week. Paid my own way thru LSU in the early 90's with no student loans and no help from parents. I did have to borrow $250 from my brother my senior year to buy books. I helped him move a couple years later and he said we were even.
We lived out off Gardere so rent was cheap, $390 for a 3 bedroom duplex.
Times were pretty lean, I remember lots of Ramen Noodles, taking the plastic salt & pepper shakers from McDonalds, swiping toilet paper from bathrooms at work, and instant mashed potatoes.
