It just depends. If it's an infantry unit, they are fighting. If it's a combat heavy engineer bat, they are building shite in the middle of the fight. The line has been blurred between reserves, national guard, and regular army. Not sure how it is on the Marine/Navy/Air Force side.

You don't see all the moms with newborns putting up signs saying "consider my newborn baby"

A Marine reserve BN lost more Marines in one deployment thrn any other Marine BN during the war. 3/25 out of New England. I was in the Marine reserves and got attached to 3rd LAR and got sent to Fallujah/Ramadi/Haditha during my deployment. All very hot spots. We weren't special or anything. A lot of the times it's just luck of the draw.

OK. Like I said, I am just basing it off of the ones I know so I am probably naive to it all.

There are some that sit around and do jack. But most do the same things the regular army does. The line has been blurred. They are all combat effective (for the most part) these days.
ETA: And this is just from staying current with my old unit and knowing a few of the top guys. I've been out 18 years.

I don't know man, I just switched from the Marines to the guard. They have like a 35-40% PT Test failure rate. Maybe 20% could hike to Army standard. I wouldn't call them combat effective.

I was going to say, I know a few fat reserves that I doubt could survive in the desert heat.

I made the same argument a few times, but I admit, I don't anymore..
I draw a line between helping during Katrina, and being deployed OVERSEAS..I don't care if you lift weights and play Xbox, just don't go to Kentucky and call it a deployment
ETA: I also discovered the difference in the Reserves and Nat Guard...God help them both...

Not trying to start a pissing match. They have some top notch dudes for sure. But the unit as a whole is not ready for combat. Hopefully if we ever get deployed we get a good six month workup to get everyone in shape

On a maybe related note and because I'm bored and wanted to tell a story:
My cousin graduated from West Point and went to Iraq commanding a bunch of Bradley fighting vehicles. He had several bad experiences including getting shot a couple times and having his platoon (or whatever it's called) get ambushed and engaged in a massive firefight that made national news. Anyway he does his 5 years and comes home and goes to work at his dads lucrative business. Great guy. Cool, down to Earth, great family yada yada. One day they all come into town for a family get together. All the women and kids are inside talking while us mens are out on pop's back porch where he is frying fish. Pops overestimates his pot to Oreida fry ratio and overflows grease onto the burner. It ignites. The next few seconds is a chaotic scramble to extinguish the fire. Dad happens to have a big towel handy so he squirts it with a water hose, kills the gas and smothers the fire. The whole thing took about 15-20 seconds. Everybody is there but my cousin. In the time it took us to get the fire out, he had ran inside screaming for everybody to get out, grabbed up both his kids and his wife, bolted outside and took cover behind their car. He did all of it in less time than it took us to get the fire out. Crazy shite. CSB

That's pretty much the reason that they get attached to other units. It's the regular army who gets these dudes squared away hopefully. The reserves just don't live it day to day so it takes a minute to get into that mindset and up to speed enough to actually see combat. But it can and is done. Everybody went to the same basic.

When I was growing up we always went to my grandparents for NYE and the 4th. My grandpa (Navy dive bomber pacific theater) and great uncle (army infantry European theater) along with their WWII buddies would blow more shite up than anyone else by far. They had a friend who made quarter sticks of dynamite in his garage and would give some to us. Terribly fun and unsafe. Even in their old age they would shoot roman candles, toss m-60's, jumping jacks, and blackcats at each other like they were kids.

I would think serious mental health issues should be addressed immediately.

My only critical (as in needing immediate attention) experience was with my brother. DMD aren't his initials and he doesn't post on this site so I'm confused.

What does that have to do with anything I've posted? I responded directly to you saying the VA does no wrong. While I am grateful for the VA and think they do a lot of good in a timely manner I also think the VA does not do enough for mental health. That is all.
