Biggest issue is lead times especially for bar joists because Amazon has been ordering absurd amounts for their various centers
Yep. Have direct knowledge of their use. Microsoft is also building data centers left and right.
Thank you all for the replies. It's about what I expected but I knew that there are people on this board with knowledge on the subject.

I work at a PVF house. How much pipe are you going to need? Hard to keep in stock and price keeps increasing.

How bad have steel prices gone up?
Not sure about uni-strut in particular, but I know for a fact that cold-formed metal studs are increasing by 10% in the Georgia market beginning July 1. Type X Gyp Bd has increased over the weekend with no warning by 0.07/sf and moisture resistant by 0.08/sf.
Good luck on landing that project!

Zero pipe on this job. It's all unistrut and threaded rod with cross bracing. We're hanging 3000' of cable basket tray from it. We will be installing a good bit of rod stiffeners.

Thank you sir! We won the first two and the customer loves our attention to detail. We did pass on a similar project in Vegas last spring but I felt with supply chain issues the timeline didn't work. We know the electrician who did that project and he's not bidding on this one. He has no desire to do the earthquake proof/resistant build as it is a major PITA. We have to have a structural engineer do the design for us.

A year ago when I was getting steel quotes they would only be good for one day. So good luck getting a quote now and expecting the same price 6 months from now.

The structure we have to build is earthquake zone 4 so it will be a very stable structure
You should be preparing your anus for the price of reinforcing steel and the lead time for bar joists and metal deck. An increase of 100% on 10,000 LF of 1/2" ATR is chump-change.

It's an existing data center warehouse and they're converting it to part of the data center space. We're installing strut and hanging rod from it.

Steel prices and lead times have shot up like a motherfricker the past year. Prepare your lube.
Posted on 4/27/22 at 3:32 pm to ISEN_AG
Yeah. Due date is going to be September 1 so unlike normal data center builds we actually have some lead time for once.

I meant y'all bid. Are you getting reimbursed for material on a cost + basis or is it included in your bid price?
It will be marked up and included in the bid. Therein lies the danger. We will most definitely put in a materials escalation clause.
What's your usual time frame from award to materials procurement? It would probably be a good idea to lock those prices in as early as possible.

Building a “stable” structure with unistrut and threaded rod? You need to ask an engineer what size of components you will need. Seismic zone 4 means nothing. What is the site class?
You’re buying manufactured parts.

No, we've sent out requests for pricing already. I know what it cost us a year ago. Just preparing my anus for the pricing to come.
It's not multi-million for us. It's probably $450-$500k depending on materials.
Still confused. You’re bidding a $450k electrical job but you haven’t purchased unistrut or all-thread in the past year?
Just seems odd.
Last I actually checked, 1-5/8 B-Line (B22) plated strut was in the $2.00-$2.10 range and HDG strut was in the $2.90-$3.00 range.
RGS conduit is currently something like 2x the price of aluminum, which is insane historically speaking.

Well that's because the point of the thread is for him to try to brag

I work with a specialty welding company. We bid a job in November with a 27’ stick of steel pipe. We got a material quote at that time.
The customer didn’t give the go ahead on the project until early April. We checked with our material supplier and the price of the pipe had doubled.

We’re bidding a new Amazon facility in Tampa. The prices are so volatile that our suppliers are only locking in for 15 days. Makes bidding very difficult. The concrete subs are bidding +/-20% top offs.

We aren't electricians and it isn't an electrical job. We're low voltage. The structure is to support cable basket tray to support low voltage cabling.

We work with structural engineers when we do these builds. There is extensive cross bracing and rod stiffeners are used as well. The end result is a very stable structure.

For a typical data center build we have 30-45 days from date of award to completion. Sometimes less. It's stressful but we've always met our date. Supply chain issues over the past couple of years have made hitting our mark even more of a challenge.

lol. better put something in your bid concerning material escalation.
This, we aren't holding material or freight prices in our bids at all right now due to vendors and steel mills doing the same. Labor and equipment bid is firm, however our bids are based on the current material market and our material and freight pricing are subject to reconfirmation at time of project award. Too much risk these days and we aren't in the business of losing money.
