I went to Philmont in 2207, with my dad. We got to take a picture on top of the Tooth with the sunrise in the background. It is one of my favorite pictures that I have. Also, I did the Key West sailing trip. That was another very fun trip. Oh yeah, My grandfather, both of my uncles and my dad, my brother and four of my guy cousins are all Eagle Scouts.

Wish I had more pics but we got lost a lot and ran from bears daily.
ETA:We banged lots of pots & pans together but the bears did not GAF.

That's unfortunate that they didn't enjoy it. I would say give it a shot again. Maybe a new pack would do the trick. But a lot of the early stuff isn't camping and outdoor skills. How intense did you expect it to be for 1st graders? Cub Scouts gets a little more camping oriented around Bear and definitely by Webelos, and Boy Scouting starts after 5th grade/age 11.

Yeah, my dad was the one that made me stick it out. At the time I thought it was pointless and I wanted to focus on basketball more. But, it landed me my first job and I've been there for 5 years now.

I was in scouts from tiger cubs all the way to eagle, which I got sophomore year of hs (iirc). Dad was in the Navy my entire childhood so my mom was our tiger den leader. I remember being able to wear our cub scout uniforms to school on Fridays, it wasn't the coolest thing as we got older but every one of the guys I made eagle with are highly successful. Went on many trips across the country and made memories I'll never forget.

Oh...Louisiana now has a High Adventure Base called Swamp Base. Not a National Base like Philmont, I don't believe.

Most definitely. Playing football and two seasons of soccer every year in h.s. didn't leave a lot of time to make all of the meetings and trips, but luckily my parents held me to my commitment, my troop leaders gave me some leeway and I earned my Eagle before the age deadline. I may be a dumbass, but I'm a well-rounded dumbass because of it.

Never was in scouts myself but heard a good point before: what else can you accomplish at that age that you'll be able to claim, put in resumes, be proud of for the rest of your life? Not much.
At one time I think you could get a bump in military rank if you were an Eagle Scout. Not sure if that's still the case.

That's definitely the case, you get a bump in rank in the rank in the Marines for sure. One of our Eagle scouts got it. He's in deployed in Iraq now.

I can't believe the good response to this article about Etling being an Eagle Scout. I truly believe that boyscouts are a great thing for kids even if they don't make it to Eagle (I didn't but my boys did). Parents keep up the good work supporting your kids!

I'm in my mid-30s. I have a section on my resume that is awards/honors - I have been blessed to have plenty, and to this day, the absolute first one listed is Eagle Scout. And every single time someone looks at my resume for one reason or another, they ask about it.

One thing about the OT, anything that appears successful or righteous has to be gay or nerdy.
Mom put me in scouts and I made it to Bobcat, until Dad said it was time to learn a John Deere. Every Eagle scout I know are hard working genuine, respectful people that deserve the honor.

I am also an Eagle Scout.(once an Eagle Scout always an Eagle Scout) I had so many great experiences as a Boy Scout. Traveled all over the country, made some lifelong friends, and learned a hell of a lot. Every young man should try Boy Scouts.
Also a Vigil member in the OA which I might be more proud of than Eagle Scout.
