My experience is that it is sometimes used for a straight relationship but usually one where they have a child or children together, and obviously live together.

Most times, though, that is used by the gays.

Yes. Liberal queefs use it. They hate the institute of marriage, so they say "partner".

Do not think I have ever used that term...GF, Fiance, dating..but not partner.

To be fair my sis and her wife hate the word partner, but they are not liberal at all.

Definitely a gay thing
Hold on now. I had a client that always used the term partner. I always felt uncomfortable with the way he looked at me. Weird vibes. One day he's telling me about this "partner" and to my great relief it turns out it's his wife. I really was relieved but kind of felt like an a-hole. Later in that same conversation he started telling me about his travels with his ex boyfriend.

The guy follows whatever the term the girl chooses to use. If not, they aren’t a couple for long. Easily not a hill to die for.

It’s because people are getting married later and way longer into serious relationships. No one uses partner instead of wife or husband.

Bingo

Girlfriend for a multi year adult relationship can seem middle school-ish or lacking formality for some folks who are serious but unmarried
