I mean yeah in a one on one fight you’d probably kick their arse if you are well trained. But better hope they don’t pull a gun

That goes without saying. You know what else??.. If you have a gun, you better hope they don't pull a gun. If you have a gun, you better hope they don't pull a knife. Action is faster than reaction and if your gun is holstered when they pull a weapon, your likely going to get hurt or killed. There are plenty of training opportunities for that sort of stuff.

Here are a couple of books. They're both old - 1970s, but most of the tactics are still valid. The books are police/patrol centric, but some of it is valid for general readers. Warning: lots of porn staches.

Absolutely, any knowledge of submissive control during an altercation is extremely valuable. My kids do BJJ and wrestling. Ive got two boys, one needs it for managing aggression, the other needs it for developing aggression.

Judo is great for self defense. A simple foot sweep or hip toss puts an opponent on the ground, and you are on your feet, ready to run or defend yourself from another opponent if necessary. Staying on your feet in a fight is an important strategy if there is the possibility of multiple opponents. Some judo throws can be devastating. Gene LeBell said that a Judo throw is like hitting a guy with the Earth.

This reminds me of the time a guy at a UFC watch party was adamant he could beat Rhonda Rousey, with his entire justification being "I'm a man".

This was peak form RR at the time and the guy was not some blue collar corn fed baw. He was built like a pile of pudding.

All I could do was laugh and attempt to explain that his "weight advantage" would be fantastic when he was thrown in his head.

Judo by itself? Better than nothing, but not great. MMA is nothing more than using the most effective techniques from each individual art. Judo throws could be incorporated into a more comprehensive set of skills to make a fighter more effective though.

Yes. First, when you fight rarely does it end standing up. It's good to know what to do when you hit the ground.

Second, it teaches you how to fall correctly which comes in handy in other sports or if your clumsy.

Third, you learn about leverage and balance.

I would think that if you're proficient with judo you'd whip the untrained folks at a bar that you're worried about.

Most if not all 'self defense' classes will teach you how to disarm someone. And judo/ju jitsu will teach you how to use an attackers weight/momentum against them.

There are limitations to how well this will work. If you are some weak frick I will overpower any and all jui Jitsu moves you try to do on me.

Judo will hold up great in your situation. I only do bjj now but dabbled in judo in my early 20’s. Unfortunately judo gyms seem to really only train the Olympic rules set these days. Which means no more single, double legs or leg grabs etc. if you can find a gym that still teaches the “dark arts” I recommend that. Also judo does teach a decent amount of ground work. Nothing like the detail of a bjj class but still effective stuff. Chokes and joint locks are still fair game and taught.

But with that said the average person has no clue what a decently trained judoka would do to him. For somebody not expecting to be thrown or trained for it, suddenly flying through the air and landing on concrete is usually a fight stopper lol.

Even a rudimentary understanding and training in any fighting or defensive style more times than not beats an untrained person in a street fight. The caveat is since the modern MMA has hit the scene, your chances of running into someone who doesn’t also have that rudimentary understanding and training are exponentially less and less.

I didn't go there, but I remember one of their instructors was some little 5'0" tall blonde woman. I've heard stories about her throwing big ole dudes around. That was the 80's, could have still been there.

I want to say her name was Connie Laverne or something like that. I believe her name is still online. To all of us it was so neat that this little woman, who was probably 40-50 at the time, could rag doll us since nobody was trained.
