I’ve encountered people who can’t read or write, but it comes with my job so it’s not shocking to me anymore

Has a customer, who in 2006, bought a brand new, upscale, fifth wheel trailer. He traded in one that was only 2-3 years old. . He paid the difference in cash, 50k. His girlfriend read the contract and he signed with an X. He could not read nor wrote. Completely blew me away. He was a tow truck driver.

Yep, they usually know some sight words. What they need to get by, but can’t read a book.

To be honest, if I were signing a certain contract, I have my lawyer come out and read it to make sure I understood everything in it....

I worked with an old black dude that couldn't read. He was a fitter, would look at the print first thing in the AM and right after lunch. He very seldom messed up.

Maybe related, idk. But i was in south georgia last week buying a piece of equipment and had to whip into an autozone. An old (probably 70s) guy called me over in the parking lot where an old beater car had a sale sign in the window for $2100. Generally seemed to have his wits but clearly uneducated, just country as a turnip green. He literally asked me how many 100 dollar bills was in 2100
Ive thought a million times since then how someone makes it to that age not knowing how to count money. Completely baffling

I live with one and it’s ridiculous. She’d never make it living on her own. Only knows a few letters of the alphabet. We’re gonna really try to focus on learning to read by the time she hits kindergarten.

Here’s something else you may already know about her-
She’s a terrorist.
(You can’t negotiate with her)

I used to know a very sharp welder who relied entirely on his helper for reading and writing. He could read drawings and do complicated math in his head, he wasn't dumb. Maybe dyslexia? In any event he's dead. Heart attack. I guess he missed all the Surgeon General's warnings.

I can't actually read. I just always guessed at what this website says and errantly pound on the keyboard. How am I doing?

Knew two kids in high school that could not read. One of them had a reading skill of a first grader. He could get the small words but that was it. He took some classes with special aid and other classes with the rest of us. I remember one of them reading in front of the class in 10th grade and it was really sad. Nobody was laughing. Both dropped out of school after we completed 10th grade. I know the special aid kid got his GED before we even graduated. That test must be very easy and somebody helped him pass it.

Working in a po boy shop in college I saw several co workers who couldn't read. Most were on work release.
I remember a lady comes up to counter "the diet coke is off..." She gives me a fresh cup with "diet coke".
shite was diet Dr pepper. They had changed labels on syrup boxes from way they used to be. The guy who changed syrup boxes obviously couldn't read.

I read somewhere that 30 million Americans can't read or write above a third grade level.
