I’m not sure if these jobs work the same as the union on the west coast.
But in San Francisco the workers have a “book” , once they retire they can pass it off to a family member and they automatically become hired. No questions.
So a father can pass his job to his son on and on down the line

Why bother with college.
Air conditioning and you don't have to rely on a union

Its the same.
These are highly regulated (protected) jobs that wouldnt fetch nearly the amount they are asking on the open market.
Its a racket.
Stevadores on the West Coast work 4 hour callouts. They drive right up to the dock with their Porsches, tie up the ship, and go home, make a 4 hour wage.
Come back, do it once more (takes about half an hour) and call it a day.

So dock workers are so essential to the economy that if they don’t work it will shut down the US but not essential enough to deserve a large pay increase?
Well they mostly went on strike to avoid automation, but don't let that argument sway you.

I don't get the hate for these guys.
Forklift and dock work isn't a high skill job, but it's not something you want to leave to anyone willing to operate the machine.
I've worked with some teenager/early 20s forklift operators and it's kind of dangerous to be around someone who treats the lift like a toy in a warehouse, let alone an actual dock where precision is necessary.
The hate is their fight against automation.

You want to be mad at a group? Look at C Suite that get paid 200X the average worker at the company
This class warfare Marxist bullshite spews forty from the mouths of the sheep every time. You want to make 200x more? Go start your own company since it must be so easy. I guarantee you the CFO could learn to operate a forklift 200x easier than a dockworker can go operate the finances and filing of the corporation.
Let’s get rid of all the executives and corporate profits and see how long these guys have jobs. Hint since you will need it. They wouldn’t have Jobs.

Everybody thinks they deserve more pay. Maybe every worker in America should strike.
Seems perfectly logical to me. Let's do it.

You do realize the pay increase is. In line with standard wage increases right?
They haven’t had a pay increase since before COVID and this one is spread out over 6 years
Are you making 62% more now than you were 6 years ago?

Cost of crawdads skyrocketing

Very few of us are getting 62% from 2020, and most of us compete with wages on the open market, unlike these guys.
Youre advocating for central planning, Comrade.

Whole lotta jealousy in this thread.
Y'all wanna get rid of unions because you aren't the ones who just got a 60% pay increase guaranteed over the course of the next 6 years. Oh, the horror! Everyday Joes understanding their power as workers and winning a deal for better pay...horrible.
Unions aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but to be an average Joe and bitch about other average Joes winning a sizeable wage increase is beyond me. I guess I'm just not that petty when others succeed.

People with the ability to economically rise above arent jealous of dipshits who require unions to get ahead.
The union baws arent doing this on their own merit, zippy. Theyre holding their breath until they turn blue, and you think that worthy of jealousy?
