I absolutely hate the word, "Coonass."
When I think of all the good things about Louisiana and the wonderful people I have known all my life living here, I just can't bear to use a word like that to describe them.
There are others who use the term amongst themselves as an identifier, and they laugh about it, but honestly, I still feel it's in poor taste. "Coonass" is a word that people from outside our state use to describe us and stereotype us in a negative way. They take advantage of the good nature and humor of Louisianians who laugh it off when it's used to identify them.
I don't let people call me a coonass, even though I am from the depths of Terrebonne Parish. My grandfather on one side was a trapper. On the other side was a farmer. I am as qualified as any to be called that. But I prefer to be called a Louisianian. Because that's what I am. I'm proud of my home and my people, and that pride is better reflected in a legitimate term than something that sounds so... wrong.

I'm not saying that at all. If a Cajun moved to NYC and had kids, those kids would be of Cajun decent. But if an Acadien kicked out of Acadia by the British in the 18th century moved to Maine and raised a family there, that person and that person's descendants would not be Cajuns.
Correct, after all the word cajun is just a Louisiana mangling of the word Acadian. I wouldn't think cajun would apply to those who fled to Maine and other parts of the northeast. To me those people have more in common with les Quebecois.

One use of the word Yankee is
quote:So a Boudreaux born in New York whose ancestors were South La Cajuns would be..........
"Yankee" refers to Northerners, or those from the regions of the Union side of the American Civil War.
You guessed it,
A CAJUN YANKEE

This may blow their minds too. If me and my wife have babies in Australia, they will be Cajun Australians.

Also my grandmother, who was from French Settlement
Well, my grandmother was from French settlement as well. She was not Cajun, she was real French, and most certainly not a coonass. If she were still alive she would certainly take offense to being refered to as coonass.

A Yankee who moves here (LA) and and have Yankee babies with a Yankee woman, the offspring will still be Yankees.
What about Yankee moving down from Michigan, marries Boudreaux from Cornerview? What are ofspring?

No . Because Cajun is an ethnicity. Being from Laffy doesn't mean you have cajun ancestory. Holy smokes you are slow
