So you are telling me mafias not associated with Sicily/Italy are to be correctly referred to as La Cosa Nostra?

To be true La Cosa Nostra you have to be Italian and you have to be Sicilian.

The mob is more a collective and is less picky on membership

Most organized crime in American was based on protection of an immigrant class who was not afforded protection of American law enforcement. The original "Black Hand" in America was just an offshoot of similar protection groups that have existed in Italy since the Romans.

Irish mob was there to offer protection to the Irish, same for Jewish mob, and Italian mob. In a generation or two these immigrants had large vointg blocks so their people were able to move into politics.

I think the mobs turning from traditional business to drugs and gun running did more to kill them off than any other illegal enterprise which is why the old guys were so against getting involved in them.

Big shift in the late 70's and early 80's. to cocaine and cartels from south of the border changed the game forever as they were much more ruthless and had no problem killing civilians and each other over turf.

Lots of the old Irish, Jewish, and Italians moved up with wealth and had offspring who went legit and attended good schools. Guys left behind were more street earners and more likely to be prosecuted by law enforcement.

Nowadays I would guess the most powerful mobs are south of the border, asian, or Russian. I remember the Russian mob moving into Louisville in the late 80's and lots of the guys are old KGB trained so they are smarter from the get go.

As for the northeast the NY and Chicago mob got the most press but it was a coast to coast thing with a territory usually having a monopoly - so less violence from turf wars - so they were not as well known in the midwest, south, and west.

There’s no such thing as the Mafia. You should have learned that as a young kid growing up.

That was according to Herbert Hoover

Unbeknownst to many one of the most lucrative businesses of the mob in the old days was the gay bars. Because of rampant homophobia the mob could use this to their advantage. While Hoover may have had files on most people it was the mob who has files on him. Now days you could be a cross dressing man with same sex desires and you could be mayor but back then it was very much the opposite.

Back in my youth (1970's), Carlos Marcello was the reigning Godfather of the metro area. Even though he lived in Metairie, it was rumored that he also had a place just outside of Abita Springs.

back in the day I always thought opening a gay bar would be a small gold mine, there was one next to the Bengal that we would go check out(worked at the Bengal) while taking a break, place was always packed, even on a traditional "slow" night, they had no place else to go

Close, but not entirely. The dream of a lot of he higher echelon mobsters who were the bosses in the late 1960's through the late 1980's is that they one day wanted to become totally legit. If they could not do it, they wanted it for their kids.

The Sicilians now for the most part are 4 and 5 generations in this country and with each generation they become less "Sicilian" and more American. The money that their grandfather's made and kept allowed a lot of them entry into the American mainstream without having to constantly look over their shoulders.

The Russians are now what the Sicilians used to be back in the 40's and 50's

You are correct

They both sucked tho.

As to later generations cleaning their act up. Old man Kennedy was a bootlegger but the money based his offspring clean enough to get a President and several Senators.

If you follow that trajectory, the hispanic and Russian mobs that infiltrated in the 1980's will probably have grandchildren in high power positions in the mainstream of American life.
