Chows are one of the top ten most aggressive dogs (#7). They are fiercely loyal to their owner, but that translates into they are very protective to that one person and everyone else better watch out.
A friend had a chow and thought the dog was gentle because it was well behaved around them. When their child went to pet the Chow while it was eating, the dog shook him like a rag doll. The wound took 70 stitches.
When I was a kid, a neighbor had a Chow and a similar event happened. The Chow sat very quietly and let a burglar break in before it attacked. It wouldn't let go even after the police arrived. The owner had to put Cayenne pepper on the dog's rear end to get it to release.

It's still your GF's dog. Your ego doesn't matter. Put a ring on it, become the HOH and then you can tell the dog how to behave.

Seriously does nobody smack a dog upside the head when they act up anymore?

Hump his leg. Show your dominance.

Thrash him within an inch of his doggy life.

He is an alpha. You are not. Adjust to your new role.

Um...RIP. I hope you have a will.

That Chow will bite the hell out of if you try to pin him down. I promise you he wants to tear your arse up because he doesn't like you around his owner. Chows normally have one person that they are very loyal to and they typically don't like to be bothered at all by anyone else . I had a Chow that was an a-hole to everyone except me . He didn't like anyone to pet or play with him and would bit if you tried. I loved that dog but couldn't risk having him around my son after he was born. I also had a friend that had a chow before her child was born. At first she kept her dog away from her son . After a while they started to get more comfortable with letting the dog sleep inside again. One night the child woke up and got out of his bed and was walking to his mom and dads room. He tripped over the sleeping dog and that dog tore him up. He had to have many facial surgeries to reconstruct his face. Make sure you have your neck protected because thats where he's going first. Good luck

Don't ever mess with a Chow while it's eating. I know, it's just the water bowl. It's obvious the dog has made you its bitch, so you might as well keep both hands beta boy.

Normally this is just a power thing, but since your girlfriend is in the mix he may be trying to impress her as well. So after you beat the dog, you're going to have to arrange a way so that he's forced to witness you fricking her.

Beat that fricker's arse. Problem solved. Nothing worse than a dog who won't listen.
Also, be careful if you're around the girlfriend. Just had a buddy break up with his girlfriend because she took the piece of shite dog's side when as it but him and a buddy he flipped it on its back and beat the frick out of it. Remember, they will always choose the dog...always.

would be careful on Chows. They are freaking mean and aggressive. I wouldn't wrestle him, just asking for a bite.
Get a choke collar,
Correct

This. As soon as you do that and your girlfriend screams that dog is going to go into survival protection mode and bite the ever living frick out of you. And he's going to be aiming for your neck.
Make him sit before he eats, make him sit before he goes outside, never reward him until. He has done his trick and get a choke collar and a short leash to walk him with.

Last post by OP was the pics of the dog and promise that he's gonna pin it.
Anyone check the local paper for "girlfriend's dog kills boyfriend headline" yet?

Our Marine friend is correct. Pin it. Show it who's boss. Don't have to hurt it. Just keep it down till it quits trying to get loose.

That dog just looks like a more "manly" version of a German Shepherd
. Good luck with that. You have to assert your dominance as an Alpha when that thing is a puppy. Now that it's 70 lbs, the only way to do so is for both the handler and the dog to take a few cuts and bruises.
Shock collars work wonders, but if the dog's at all intelligent, good luck getting that shock collar on the second time.
