There is definitely something to be said for this. Very much agree

How is it on maintenance? Been pretty reliable?

It's a 2011 with 157,000 miles on it plus reliability is a mixed bag for that model year. I've replaced the clutch, the turbo and the high pressure fuel pump. Some warranty recalls including the chain tensioner. Oil changes are optional as it burns oil a little bit. I just add a quart here and there until I feel like taking it in. It's been paid off for years so I don't mind the maintenance costs. Cheaper than a car payment. The current gen 3 JCWs are fantastic cars. The switchable exhaust on them sounds awesome.

Just don't do it at night.

Driving through desolate Indian reservations in nowhere, Montana in pitch black was spooky

that spookiness is the best part... I'll never forget that bright full moon going through empty Oklahoma on their turnpike in the wee hours to Tulsa... The small towns that really made me think of the old West and told me I was in Texas lol

I rarely take the interstate anymore. I actually average a better speed on backroads since I'm not sitting for ten miles at a time behind two semis side by side on the interstate going 60.

I-26, I-77, and I-20 here in SC are packed full of traffic almost seven days a week now.

My sister-in-law can't drive on the interstate. No, seriously. She has a panic attack and can't do it. When she and my wife go to Atlanta on business, either my wife drives or they go back roads. I've never heard of anyone else that does this.

Re: LA 15 from Ferriday

This is part of a loop I make at least annually, from St. Fran, up to Natchez, to Ferriday, down to Morganza, crossing the Audubon bridge, back to St Fran.

You get to checkout all of the river control structures.

did that out to West Texas.

Tons of lonely highways in Texas. I did San Angelo to Amarillo on backroads (traveling to a high school football game... same district 7 hours apart). Beautiful crossroads kinda shite. Traveled on a 2 lane highway for miles with no power lines and no fences, on either side. Do you know how uncommon that is?

I used to love just getting in the car with some good music and a fat joint and driving around back roads with no destination in mind. Haven't done it since I got married though because my wife said it sounds boring and I never could get her to join me. Now with 2 kids I just don't have the time.

Thanks for yet another reason to never get married or have kids.

is a great way to get a speeding ticket

is a great way to get stuck behind a tractor or logging truck for 20 miles

is a great way to turn a 3 hour trip into a 12 hour trip

My first experience going on a trip that I remember was to Baton Rouge. Taking the old 28 to Hineston, then to Hwy 165 to Forest Hill. Then on to Chaneyville and always stopped at Lea's Lunch for a ham sammich and maybe pick up a pie. Then down 71 to Hwy 190 to Krotz Springs and if we didn't stop at Lea's we would stop at the Little Capitol or Stuckeys before KS. And on to Baton Rouge. Still take that route most times.
