Probably 200 years ago, people did do that. It was actually believed/practiced in many parts of the world. I guess they ignored the potentially life threatening issues of an internal allergic reaction. People learned, and now no one does it. You can give it a shot, though.

The podcast Sawbones has an episode on the history of poison ivy and treating it.

That's how Westley became immune to iocane powder so I see no reason why it wouldn't apply to poison ivy.

My grandmother(no pics ) told me a story when she was young, riding her bicycle around some burning leaves, breathed in the smoke from burning poison ivy. Ended up in the hospital with sores in her mouth and lungs. Terrible!

I've been licking doorknobs for years to build up my immunity. It works great. I'm never sick!

I would imagine eating poison ivy would work the same way. Go for it!

You know how people used to say to you that there's no such thing as a dumb question? They lied to you.

Inhaling poison ivy smoke would definitely hospitalize me in a life-threatening situation.

I dunno about eating it, but luckily I've always been immune.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's and we pretty much grew up outside climbing trees and stuff. My siblings and cousins would get it, but I never did.

All of this. I can roll around in it and not get it.

I used to be fairly immune to poison ivy as a kid. But once I got into my 20s I started having some allergic reaction and each exposure since then has gotten worse. I haven't stopped working outdoors but I have to be very careful. If I touch poison ivy I have to wash it off immediately or I will be visiting the doctor in a couple of days for a steroid shot.

I have always been immune to poison ivy. I made a chunk of change rubbing it on my arms to collect a bet the next day or so when nothing happened.

At my age I am not going to test it anymore juuuuuuuust in case.

Since I catch it when the wind blows, I’m not trying that.

When I was very young I could not get less than three feet from poison ivy or I’d catch it. My mom finally took me to my Pediatrician and he gave her a small bottle with a dropper. It had a light color liquid in it and he told her to put a drop on my tongue per day until the bottle was empty. Whatever it was I finally stopped getting poison ivy so easily. That was 50 years ago.

You do it then find a friend to do it as well. Then it’ll be peer reviewed research and then Dr. Fauci can let America know it works.

I wonder how many people's throat would swell and cause breathing problems.

Try eating snake venom.

Perfectly safe. Assuming you don't have stomach ulcers or intestinal bleeding before hand.
