It's kind of known.

Right now .0001% of the cars on the road are EVs.
You are wrong by four orders of magnitude. If you don't know what that means, it's pretty bad. I can see why you're so confused by this topic.

when that number turns into 100%
It will take decades to approach 100%.
quote:

it will be an unthinkable load on our grid
Not only is it not unthinkable, but it is pretty easy to ballpark it. A typical EV gets about 3 miles per kwh. In the US, we drive about 3.2 Trillion miles per year, so it would require about a Trillion kWh of electricity to power a 100% EV fleet. We already use about 4 Trillion kWh of electricity per year, so that "unthinkable" load would be an increase of about 25%.

That sounds achievable over the course of a few decades, doesn't it? But we don't even have to add that much capacity due to our cyclical use of electricity (we use more during the day than at night, and more in the summer than winter). That means we might not have to add any capacity at all (except maybe regionally/locally), because we can easily produce 25% more power with our current capacity just by charging smartly. That is, at night. In fact, if we reach a certain critical mass of EVs, we could get away with less generation capacity than we currently require. All those EVs can serve as grid storage, so we could smooth out the highs and lows and run all our plants at peak efficiency without having to fire up peaker plants during high demand periods.

I see a lot of advantages to it as a second vehicle.Just plug it in when you get home.Don’t have to worry about oil changes, radiator or transmission service,no belts or hoses.
I wouldn’t want to rely on it for taking road trips,

That’s great, but you are one of the lucky 63% of vehicle owners in America that have a garage or carport as of 2017.

But do I have a Commie Flag tacked up on the wall in it?

What do you do when you run out of juice on the highway ? Does someone bring a generator or do you carry a solar panel in your trunk?

I’d love to have a Tesla.

You mostly just don't do that. It should never be a surprise if you don't have enough charge to get to where you're going.

Easiest way is to just tow the car in gear for a while. That will charge the battery.

ETA: For every mile you get towed, you get 3-5 miles worth of charge.

According to what I read in these threads it will never ever happen. you have a fancy App that will route you to your destination based on the location of charging stations. It might take 10-12 hours to make what is normally a 8 hour trip. I had a long conversation with a Tesla owner at the beach this summer, in his words "you get to go where the car can get charged not where you really would like to go."

As I said, I am all for EVs. I think they are undoubtedly better engines and are absolutely the future. But, I think it's the clientele I hate. Yea, when I read your post I couldn't help but hear some faggoty voice with the absolute confidence of a middle school hall monitor as you spit those numbers out. Again, we have no idea what kind of pressure being 100% electric will do to our grid so I hope we truly build up or infrastructure.

Again, we have a pretty good idea, which I laid out reasonably accurately for you. To reiterate, it would require a 25% increase in total production, which is achievable with today's grid capacity with smart charging, and easily achievable by the time we are anywhere near 100% EV.

In short, it's a non-issue aside from possibly some local improvements that may be required.

I worry more about the batteries than anything else. How are they going to be disposed of?

Almost everything in the batteries is infinitely recyclable. Right now mining new is still cheaper than recycling, but as more "spent" batteries come around those economics will change. It's hard to imagine a more mineral-rich "mine" than a pile of batteries.

Also, depending on how the economics and tech develop, it might be beneficial to give spent car batteries a second life as home energy storage. Less than about 70% initial capacity is considered end of life for a car, but that's still a lot of capacity for a stationary installation.

I'm in the Chicagoland burbs, and the amount of Teslas on the road is moreso prevalent this year than I've ever seen...they are everywhere now
