Everybody that hates data center use Chat GPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google, Netflix, bla bla bla every single day but they hate data centers
Gotcha.
Gotcha.

Horse people hated automobiles. Wood people hated steel mills. It's the next iteration of technology and there will always be a segment of the population that doesn't want change and will grasp at any reason to resist.

Electricity costs for areas near data centers increased by as much as 267% compared to five years ago, a Bloomberg News analysis found last year.

Everyone needs to understand that the people and the minds behind all of this are vastly superior to the general public...sorry thats just the truth. This isnt about making a quick buck its again about changing the world.
What artificial intelligence is capable of producing and is going to produce is hard to explain and comprehend for the common folk. This is unfortunately a case of "We know better and we know what's good for you"
frick all that.
I’m not generally anti-AI, but this mentality among the tech elites is a problem. Let’s assume, for a moment, that the following opinions spouted by the tech CEO’s and AI leaders are true:
1. That AGI is inevitable.
2. That AGI will completely change the concept of “work” in human society.
3. That this will cause a major economic disruption, necessitating UBI.
4. That it’s a race, and the first lab to create AGI will hold all of the power.
..then what you’re telling me is that it’s a race to create an even more significant tech oligarchy than we already have? A race to concentrate the wealth (and therefore the political power) in the hands of a few? Why the frick should the general public subsidize that race?
Why would we willingly accept higher costs so that Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, and/or Elon Musk can become even richer and give us table scraps in the form of UBI? If anything, they should be subsidizing our electrical costs.

That is the rub.
That is the reason I have such reservations regarding AI.

They hate the data centers, they use the product of it (AI services) daily though.
We've seen time and again the over-hyping of new tech and then the settling down to reality of it (most recently EVs and VR). This is no different but the key really needs to be on PSCs holding these facilities' feet to the fire by mandating they pay fully for the electrical infrastructure needed to power them (and making sure the energy companies aren't double-dipping by gouging other customers to pay for it) as well as pushing them to using closed-loop cooling systems (so they don't need to constantly be drawing from the water supply).
If the companies don't want to do all of that, the PSCs should tell them to move on to the next state.

People and companies should stop using AI if you want to stop data centers. It won’t happen.

Bloomberg, possibly purposefully, conflated wholesale prices to end user prices.
Their story admits that the wholesale prices were not passed on to customers but just leaves it at
They also didn’t specify what span they were using or how they arrived at the figure.
Bloomberg did a lot of research, but did not address specific user end bills other than publishing a quote of what one guy said. They coined the "size of Manhattan " talk which gets repeated and is far from the truth. (Meta in N La would have to cover their property edge to edge and be 8-10 stories tall to be the same square footage as manhattan).

I don't hate the data centers. I hate the closed door, NDA sweetheart deals that utilities, PSC/PUC, and State leaders are giving them.

This is the problem. It just needs to be done responsibly.

Yep. Data Centers didn't create this process they are just using the system in place.
The shift from industrial plants using the process to data centers has presented the riff. ITEP shifted to local levels helped for a minute with local government holding businesses responsible for employing locals. That was quickly jerked away because the state needed to dictate instead of small government.

Thats not how any of this works

this is why they're fearmongering with China and we have to quickly build or China will accomplish it before us.

China is asshoe, they are doing this. That doesn't mean we can't keep up in a responsible way.

everybody is a NIMBY when the deleterious consequences effects them personally. I don't give two fricks about a data center in Michigan. I am very concerned with the ones planned for Louisiana as I have zero confidence my power and utility bills will not be negatively affected by the DC's operation.
You post your quip as if you are levitating above everyone else and are above it all. But you'll be crying like a bitch when your AC or heat goes off in harsh weather events because META wants to track your existence.
Civilization's next steps forward don't matter much if you're living in the dark ages (literally) without electricity (or sufficient water) because Google is unfairly consuming available utilities.

Data centers are the new solar farms/wind turbines.
No one but the person who cashed the check ever wants them there.

People always say new tech creates new jobs to use and maintain the new tech. This isnt the case this time. AI replaces far more jobs then it creates, by a landslide. The money saved wont trickle down, its just going to be harder and harder to live.
I think this statement exemplifies the dumbass in this thread.
There's a lot more information on all of this beneath the headlines. Yet everyone wants to read the provocative headline and rush to the message board instead of reading the article and researching the assertions made and discovering the actual facts.
And no, I'm not going to provide a link. I have done my research. How about you do yours before you post garbage on a message board.
That goes for all of you morons and your fear porn posts.
