I have 3 dogs, one is an Aussie. The Aussie is crazy as frick. They all are, not sure I could handle two young ones.

We have a 9 year old Malinois mix. She was always energetic but had started slowing down some. Very obedient and prone to be a little anxious. We unexpectedly got a heeler about four months ago. She was probably nine months old when she showed up. I was very concerned about them getting along. If I had sought out another dog, I would have chosen a male.

It has gone very well and the older dog seems to have less anxiety and is more playful and active. More like she was several years ago. The new pup is a firecracker and has kept everyone on their toes. Other than a couple of play fights that got a little rough, they seem to enjoy being together.

Overall, I think it has been positive. When something happens to the older dog, I will definitely get another to keep the new girl company.

ETA: Do expect a lot of time with the young’uns throat in the older one’s mouth! Alarming at first, but apparently essential to set the tone.

We wound up getting the puppy. They’re best friends right now. Always playing. Yes the older one will dominate and pin the younger one down, but the little one gets right back up and keeps nipping away and antagonizing the situation

I've got 4 dogs and I've wondered how I got here but regardless, I can't imagine life without them.

3 of them are female with one the oldest being a 5 year old Lab/Collie Mix, the middle a 1 year old Red Heeler/Catahoula Mix and the youngest being a 3 month old Blue Heeler puppy.

My one male dog, he is 4 and is also a Blue Heeler. They all get along together so I've not had any problems. I also stagger out their vet visits over the course of a year so it's not a huge bill when I go for the regular check up stuff.

We have always had a minimum 2 dogs to help keeping themselves entertained whether playing inside or outside. They are like kids!

I wound up getting the puppy and that was the best decision I could have made. She is a lot more mischievous than I remember the other being, but they get along so well and she listens well due to following my older one. Glad I went with my instinct and got her

opposite sexes tend to work better than two females. Especially in a herding breed- one will try to be dominant which is fine if the other accepts it quickly, but of they both want to be dominant, then you are going to have fights.

2 females:
Yes, as long as both are spayed. If either or (god help you) both are in “in tact”, prepare for war around “in heat” time.

I have a female German Shepard and someone abandoned a puppy by our house. Thought the puppy was a Chihuahua but ended up being mostly German Shepard.

Had two females ( actually three at one time).. no issues.. their personalities built on each other. Was a lot of energy in the house..

Both very old.. they relied on each other. Unfortunately down to just one now.. her personality changed when her sister passed last Easter..

Worth doing it once to determine if your a one dog or two dog person.. hard to describe the difference but it is a different vibe and commitment level.

Good call. Have had dogs in pairs for 20 yrs. Can’t imagine only having 1 now. Have to do that for a bit after one passes and the newly solo dog seems bored and lonely.
