Just to put into perspective how large the blast was in Beirut today, the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 carried out by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols was 2.5 tons of ammonium nitrate (and other chems) while the blast in Beirut was 2,750 tons.

Was this up-close-ish street view vid posted yet?

LINK

Supposedly the guy filming this died. You can see buildings getting destroyed as the shockwave approaches him.

"If the official reports are accurate , And the #Beirut huge blast is caused by the explosion of 2750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate(˜1.1 kiloton bomb),then it is considered the 9th largest artificial non-nuclear explosion. That is 1/13 the yield of the infamous "Hiroshima bomb"

Only 181,000 times smaller than Krakatoa's eruption.

I cannot believe that big white building right by where the blast was is still, mostly, standing.

Other buildings farther away had their roofs peeled back like a can in some of the video I saw.

I wonder if those silos benefited from being so close to the origin that a lot of the force was directed up at an angle?

Also, it's a concrete silo structure and the other buildings around seem to be metal building warehouses.

Remember the huge explosion in Tainjin China a few years ago? Looked like the apocalypse.

Has anyone mentioned PEPCON in Nevada?

For a sense of scale, the blast wave you see moving outward is moving at the speed of sound. At Henderson, NV's elevation, that's about 1,100 feet per second.

This one was about 1 kiloton TNT equivalent. The Beirut blast was probably a little bit bigger than this one.

Am I missing something or if those pictures are true did they know it was about to happen?

Just noticed the nitro on the bags but is it real?

That big white building in front of him on the right gets completely destroyed.

No? Are you referring to a kinetic object causing the explosion ?

Yeah I have some questions as well.

Who what where when and why was this pic taken & what were they doing?

Tools that look like they broke in laying there.

May be thinking of that nitrogen fertilizer plant that blew up.
Had some apartment building across the street that got wiped out.
ETA Just saw a video of Texas City explosion
Not the one I was thinks about.
The one I was thinking of was a few years ago

I was making a joke about the history of industrial disasters in the Galveston Bay Area. The fact that “Texas City Disaster” and “Texas City Refinery Explosion” are two distinct Wikipedia articles about events that occurred over 50 years apart should tell you everything you need to know.

You damn right. The original fire was just a smoke screen.

It looks like it, but I don’t know the science behind chemical explosions in open air environments.

Could just be a product of the chemical reaction of whatever benzene or nitrate, if indeed that’s the real cause.

ETA: I, and the replies to my observation, already share a downvoter. Guess we’ll find out who it is soon.
