90% of the time isn't it usually found to be pilot error? They panic in an emergency or something crazy.

Airplane manufacturers love to push this narrative.

Much more commercial aircraft have crashed due to issues with the aircraft than pilot error.

looks like the aircraft lost airspeed, then gained it (with the loss of altitude

Couldn't that be a stall? Pointing the nose down and increase airspeed to recover?

Very well could be and they just didn't have enough altitude to recover.

Indonesia’s finance ministry says 20 officials were on board the Lion Air flight when it crashed.

Spokesman Nufransa Wira Sakti confirmed the number, as reported by Bloomberg.

The plane serving Lion Air flight JT 610 was configured to seat 189 passengers, said aviation consultant Gerry Soejatman. He told the BBC the MAX 8 had been experiencing problems since it was introduced, including difficulties maintaining a level flight.

Western Airlines have all but perfected air travel. Asia has a lot of catching up to do. That’s like 5 major Asian crashes in the last 5 years.

This one or the model in general?

Boeing may be in trouble.

Korean Air, All Nippon, Cathay, Japan Air, Singapore Air, etc... are all orders of magnitude better than any American airliner.

Stall speed has a lot of variables so it’s very difficult to say for sure.....but it’s a tough sell to suggest a stall at speeds greater than 200 knots.

Given I feel something would have leaked by now:

That flight profile + no Mayday call = 90% suicide run. Interesting question is if the copilot was complicit or murdered.

EDIT: assuming that narrative, it looks like a fight at the wheel with the ping pong in altitude with no drop in airspeed (that is a possible maneuver if they were trying to restart engines). But no speed drop on upswing implies they had power.

According to reports the pilots radioed asking to return to the airport, that would seem to indicate a mechanical issue.

The pilots requested a return to Jakarta.

Saying this was on purpose/planned is conjecture at this point.

Prior flights show them reaching that altitude after only a few minutes. They should’ve been around 20,000 ft at 10 min. Speed a little low and erratic. Altitude should be smooth line up to 25,000 ft. Must be a coincidence that it plunged at the turn. Engine trouble or fuel contamination?

Vast majority of accidents are pilot error. Yes a lot of times there may be a minor mechanical malfunction that the pilot misinterprets or does not execute the proper procedure. They crash due to the pilots’ error and not necessarily the mechanical issue. Additionally, the NTSB has proven most accidents are a result of a chain (normally around 7) things/incidents during the flight that the pilots messed up on/with.

Yeah, this is what I was wondering. Seems they should have been above 10,000 at least by that time.

20 Indonesia finance officials on board?

Leicester City's owner and some other high dollar Thais die in a weird helicopter crash Sat night?

Odd coincidences.

Both or just one? Possible that one pilot was going nuts and the other asked for a return?

Plane definitely took a good dip and then recovered. If it was a fuel or engine issue they should have been able to glide the plane down still right?

How many 1,000 feet does it normal take to recover from a stall? Why would a plane stall on the initial accent? If you were losing power would you not level off until it was returned?

Isn't this the plane that Southwest was planning on using for their new flights to Hawaii? If so, may have to rethink taking one for awhile.
