Or is this darwinism? Flight training in an area with storms.

Good article discussing the problems right now as a reaction to this crash.

Time builders are the flight instructors who, although they hold an instructor certificate, are focused on building their hours, not teaching. They may not know how to teach beyond the test because that’s how they were trained. This is particularly common if they went through an accelerated program where the focus is get ’em, get ’em out.

I’ve got some pilot buddies and from listening to them over the years, this isn’t uncommon at all.

My friend had a cocky flight instructor that berated him for physically checking his fuel tank with a wooden dowel to verify his fuel gauge was operational on an older plane.

3 months later the instructor ran out of fuel crashed and died.

Kid sounds like a moron. You should have an IQ test before getting into a plane.

The flight path was directly in the path of several storms. They should’ve never made this flight.

Similar to ‘sucker holes’ the CFI, being the obvious arrogant arse he has shown himself to be, lacked the wisdom to know better/do better as it pertains to starting a flight thinking they could beat the storm. What a POS and a fool.

His first solo was Oct 2020.

I am personally going to block out everything I have learned in the last 15 minutes and go back to the blissful ignorance of thinking all the commercial pilots plying planes I am on spent years dodging SAMs and dogfighting against the best in the world.

How far into the program was this student? I mean surely at some point you have to train in shitty conditions so that when it happens in the future you know what to do when you have a plane full of lives in your hands.

That's a great breakdown. And of course the (alleged) father of the teacher is on there blaming the student and talking about "demanding professionalism" and all that, after his son very publicly (on social media) makes fun of this student and acts about as unprofessionally as possible. What a joke. And now two people are dead. But hey, at least the teacher got to publicly shame someone online before he died I guess.

I’m certain weather conditions and considerations were covered in the didactic part of his training, however it seems like he had been used to taking a verbal beating by his CFI’s and likely was fearful to question the instructor re: weather.

While the student pilot could and should’ve aborted plans for this flight, ultimately the fault lies with the CFI.

My thought exactly. No way he’s experienced enough to be teaching others to be a pilot.

The experienced guys are too busy making bank at their airline jobs to want to instruct the rugrats for $30/hour.

Are you a pilot as well as a nurse? Did I miss this episode of the OT?

I think there is a difference between shitty conditions and not flying into weather that can literally rip your plane apart. You wouldn't teach handling nautical weather to someone while in a 14' Jon boat with a 25 hp motor during a wicked summer thunderstorm on Maurepas. You would teach them to run in the other direction like their life depended on it... because it would.

I would not trust my life or flight instruction to someone young/dumb enough to be on Snapchat.

Not strange at all to have young instructors.

Mine was 21 when I was 19. He had been flying since 16 and was building hours to get his commercial license at a flight school.

That's one of and probably the best ways for them to earn hours free and gain more quality experience.

This guy was obviously immature and shouldn't have been an instructor though.
