I think you are confusing a breathalyzer with a blood test.
The breathalyzer will register the alcohol in your throat/mouth

It's already been mentioned that a breathalyzer will pick up recently drunk alcohol. That could very well be true. I don't know. It sounds feasible.
But what I'm talking about here is that your body absorbs alcohol at a fairly constant rate. Even if you chug a fifth of whiskey, you are not going to immediately be stumbling drunk. You will soon, but your body has to absorb all that alcohol into your bloodstream first. The reason chugging a fifth of whiskey makes you drunk "faster" isn't because you drank it faster. It's because you have a shitload of whiskey in your system that is constantly putting more and more alcohol into your bloodstream.
