why? Do you struggle like the OP with your kids not respecting you?

Nope. Been married 26 years. Second marriage, made plenty of mistake in 1st and second. I have kids that are 34, 33, 19, and 17. The problems I had as a parent were more from dealing with kids splitting time with one parent who is very permissive and one who is very strict (that would be me).

Parenting seems simple and in the theory of parenting, it kind of is. The proper application is what can get difficult. Each kid is different. The goal is to produce good, responsible adults, so far, I think I did that.

There is my history.

Offered to play Fortnight with my addicted son to see what it was all about. I ended up becoming addicted to Forrnight myself and we both stay up until 1am on school nights playing the game. Wife has left us and gone to live with a youth baseball coach and wants divorce if I don't "grow up." In front of my son, I told her to pound sand all the way back to her new pound town at Coach Ronnies house and me and my son laughed our asses off. I lost my job but had enough money put back to last a year. I know this is just a phase and I can shake this addiction as soon as I am ready to renengage with my wife and former responsibilities. She just needs to chill the frick out.

That’s the best I’ve ever done.

I found a bush and hid in it with a sniper rifle. I’m not geed enough to build like the kids do.

Mine does. The parents control our household not the kids. Man up.

It's a problem all over. Worse thing I ever did as a parent was allow that crap into my house. If you have an addictive personality, it could be trouble. How old is your son? Limit his time.

What are parents doing when they come home from work? On weekends? If we, as parents sit around and watch tv for hours every day then we should expect our children to follow suit. They look to us as examples.

WTF? He pushes back? You’re the father. Act like it. He pushes back? Put that motherfricker in his place and let him know you’re the parent and he’s the child. He does what he’s told to do. He pushes back? This is the biggest problem you have. Your wife too since she wants you to be more assertive. Quit being such a pussy and make him stop playing when YOU say stop. Be the head of the household and discipline your kid. He needs it, your wife wants it, and you are obligated to do it.

Holy shite, knowledge bomb = dropped

There are far too many “men” running around that haven’t the slightest clue how to be a man and that’s not necessarily their fault but few are trying to fix it.

Women want you to be a leader and leaders don’t let their kids dictate how the household is run. Kids don’t run the house, the mother/stepmother do.

Mom and Dad don’t exist because of the child, the child exists because of the Mom and Dad. Stop putting your child on a pedestal and do some soul searching to teach your son how to be a man for later in life.

It starts by you running your household and being the leader that you are not being right now.

We have a very nice park nearby. Our neighborhood is like a forest with it's tree covered canopy. When we get home we take a walk to the park either with or without the dogs. Because we raised our daughter correctly, she joins us for our walks or bike rides. Not every day...sometimes mom and dad want to discuss non-kid stuff during our walks. My daughter also walks the youngest dog everyday when she gets home from school. My daughter also rides her bike to the store if she wants something. We make sure she gets her outside time. We also have a pool which really helps get everyone out of the house during the summer time.

what a great read. takeaways:

the OT is out of touch with reality. And there are some really lazy weak parents on here.

Ultimately, though, this is a bad place to ask for advice

Asking about video game addiction on the OT is like asking about alcoholism in a dive bar... where only a few of the drunks know that alcohol is addictive.

My dad drinks wine in a coffee cup while he drives. Turned out fine.

Would you recommend that for everybody or even most people? No.

Sounds pretty easy. He gets an hour or two a day and then you take his systems power cord.

When you figure this out... don't tell my wife because she's trying to figure out how to limit my Fortnite game playing.

So far, she is unsuccessful.
