Such skills have often been replaced by virtual reality games and activities performed on screens. These activities, while realistic, are no substitute for actual hands-on experience, explains Kneebone, for real-world experience broadens understanding and spatial awareness

Eh. Two points:

I have personally never seen any studies that have shown that those who had been in shop class etc had better manual dexerity than those who didn't where as I've certainly seen studies of those who play videos have better hand eye coordination. Additionally, I'm pretty building a bird house in shop class isn't going to teach you how delicate you need to be to dissection lymph nodes off the jugular vein or carotid or how to peel the parotid gland off the facial nerve.

#2 there's increasing surgical technology in the operative room: microscope, endoscopes, laproscopic, robotics, hell they now have some companies (Olympus) coming out with 3D goggles microscopic technology. All of this is to say that video game use and getting use to operating what's on the screen and not in front of you on your eyes is an important skill set in modern surgery.

My sister is an OB/GYN. They use robots for hysterectomies. It's a lot like playing video games. In fact, she got an Xbox to practice her hand eye coordination.

ETA: The robot is controlled by the surgeon with a similar device to a controller.

Have had several teenagers come work for the summer who had to be shown how to use a tape measure. It wasn't that they didn't know how to use it effectively (big lines vs small lines), they had never held one in their hand in their life before. It was a totally new experience.

The computer will be doing the cutting in the future so we good.
We already have robots that do. The Da Vinci Surgical System has been around for a while and works quite well.

Never used a tape measure? What did they use to measure their dicks?

You mean cell phones that use predictive text algorithms to guess what letter you are likeliest to use next even if you are a little off on the press?

You mean video games that often have at least auto aim refinements if not outright targeting?

I don’t believe the OP as being a sudden issue, but that’s a rather silly counter to it.
