hell, isn't Econ a BA in most/many colleges?
LSU used to have both BS & BA in Econ.

No idea if that’s still the case.

The BA was substantially easier. Very little math, statistics, etc., compared to the BS. A lot of people got on the BS track not knowing the difference.

I’m good with this. This whole idea that you have to be a college graduate to have a good job is bullshite.

They should also get rid of the H1Bs. There are a lot of unemployed Americans who would be glad to do those jobs.

An outright ban on H1Bs wouldn't be great but to raise the floor on the minimum salary would be beneficial since organizations (Disney) wouldn't be able to replace entire IT staff with these workers.

Good. Someone needed to disrupt the system. Please explain to me why someone getting a degree in economics needs two semesters in French? Just extra tuition is all it is

Much of the increase in tuitions go toward expanding middle management, things like Dept of Outreach and Diversity.

It's only a matter of time before they are pressured to include some sort of mandatory "diversity training" so the people currently employed by the colleges can have something to do other than riot.

Universities are desperately trying to hold onto the idea that it’s of the utmost importance to be well rounded, but the market is showing it does not agree with some exceptions. College is becoming a dinosaur with diminishing ROI and exorbitant costs.

if you desire to be well rounded, grab a library card or hit up some SkillShare online, and avoid the extra tuition costs.

these things exist already, but I'm sure Google will bring some validity and cache to the whole thing

it's about time higher learning was disrupted. This will be the new trade school

To be fair, the purpose of taking courses outside of your focus is to make you well rounded. Obviously those courses get overlooked by most students, and some have been weaponized to a degree. But college =/= job training, or at least it shouldn’t.

That said, plenty of people don’t need to go to college.

So you'd take 4 years of economics / shite related directly to economics?

And you'd want to hire a person who'd done that for 4 years?

Google doesn't care about whether or not people have economic security - they want more qualified people applying for their positions. The more qualified applicants there are, the more positions they can fill at a lower cost.

It's about cheaper labor for them, not some fulfillment of corporate idealism.

This is the natural course when you subsidize an activity.

Before WWII, most jobs, including professional and managerial jobs, didn't require a degree. It started with the GI Bill, whose purpose was, in part, to keep millions of veterans from all landing in the job market at the same time. One of the ways to spread out the impact was to send a lot of them to college for a few years.

Same at USM when I was there. You could choose the BA option and dodge all those stultifying MIS classes.

The article mentions a similar program already in place for $49/mo.

I figured it would be way more than that

I imagine there will be quite the opportunity for ad revenue for Google.

We’ll tell that to all the 50-80 year olds who told their kids they wouldn’t make it without a college degree.

Of course universities don’t care because they’re bringing in more money than ever going from a place of high learning to a degree factory.

So the value of most degrees depletes while education costs continue to rise, and we wonder why stuff like Occupy Wall Street and Antifa have blown up in the last 15 years.

The truth is unless your degree is from a major that still has value (Stem degrees for the most part) its probably not worth going to college.

I'll give it a trial run. Wonder if it can be done at night or on the weekends. Be good time for me to make a lateral move and get out of my current industry

An outdated concept in a world where specialization is increasingly more important for gaining and maintaining employment and access to global information networks is practically universal in most well-industrialized societies.

you shouldn't need a college diploma to have economic security

Wild that Google gets it.
