a lot depends on where you're at and what level
california max v. low security fed is night and day
california prison is one of my biggest fears in life. you will basically be forced to join a gang based on race. all of the major crime synidcates have major power in prison, from the mexican mafia to aryan biker gangs.
low security federal sucks, don't get me wrong, but i imagine almost every poster on here could do it pretty easily

A long time ago, I took a tour of the federal facility in Milan, Michigan and it was a joke. Actually seemed like a pretty good place to be for a while. I think white collar criminals go there.
I would kill myself before I had to go to the big state prison in Jackson.

Honestly depends on your crime. Cops who commit crimes have it rough.
If you’re doing a year for beating a guy half to death for fricking your wife then you likely won’t get raped if you just mind your business and do your time.
If you’re in there for molesting kids you won’t have a rectum left after a couple months

I’ve done a month in EBR.
10 month in Catahoula/rapides parish (they shipped me after 6 months). Half of Catahoula was over flow from EBR.

My cousin has spent more time in prison as an adult than he has a free man. Nothing like murder or anything.
Just theft, drugs etc. He gets out every few years, stays clean for a few months and then goes right back to what he was doing before.

Either the other inmates see the name in the paper (I actually know of one instance where they beat the shite out of the wrong guy because their names were similar) or an inmate who happens to also have a case in the same courtroom watches the court appearance and tells people when they get back from court.
When I represent someone on a charge that might cause them issues at the prison, I intentionally make a point to hold them until the end of the docket, whenever possible.

Here's the real truth from someone who unfortunately has done 2 stints over 11 years. Federal prison is SO much better than any state prison, unless it's served in a max.

are definitely instances of rape, mainly in the higher security instituitions. If you're sentenced to a higher security prison DO expect to be challenged right away. Most inmates have done time a few times and can feel new blood
and will "try" a newcomer either sexually or physically.
With the way times are it's probably better in prison now than before with all the reduced sentences and early releases.

in my line of work i get to meet a lot of guys who have done time and nobody picked state over federal
as one guy told me "they even have drink machines like mcdonalds"
now these aren't terrorists, so that makes a difference. those supermax fed facilities suck. there isn't any "butthole" danger, but they pretty much have you isolated in a shitty cell 20+ hours a day
