The current Pilot has a weird shifting thing with the transmission.
If Honda has a historically weak engineering point it is trannys. Both durability and "tuning" have been spotty especially in their larger vehicles. The new 9 spd in the MDX has caused much consternation on the forums.

Either way you go. You're good

the front seats are incredibly uncomfortable. no lumbar support (has it, it just sucks) whatsoever, upper back leans forward, it is just ergonomically incorrect. It drives like crap. Hard to turn the wheel when braking hard, if accelerating hard out of a turn you'll experience severe over steer, traction on the fwd sucks. The JBL premium sound system is complete garbage. None of these things were issues in the old MDX. We went Highlander over Pilot because (1) we are dumb and (2) for the captains chairs to make easy 3rd row access for two kids. The Highlander is nice, but I understand why there are so many 1-3 year old used models out there. We did not drive the Pilot. The FWD issues may exist there too. The MDX is part time AWD then switches to FWD. Unsure if Pilot is the same way. I can't believe I forgot - the Highlander has a noticeable exhaust drone to it, almost like we have a fart can muffler, only between certain rpms.
We also do not have any of these issues, but comparing a Toyota to an Acura or Lexus on the performance / luxury end isn't a real fair comparison.
It drives like a FWD mid sized SUV, not a luxury mid sized SUV with AWD.
If you want a performance mid sized SUV, neither the Pilot nor the Highlander is the right choice.

Do you mean torque steer? If you do mean over steer then you and your wife must have mastered the Scandinavian flick and if you can get the back to rotate significantly (under control) on a FWD Highlander all I can say is .
Yes, thanks. I knew there was a name for it.

Test drive them both. I find that Hondas have more road noise.

This may be due in part to Honda's and Acura's historical propensity to spec OEM tires that have lots of road noise and low tread life. The compounds are different than those of the "same tire" sold through tire stores, you can get the OEM compound/construction in the aftermarket but usually, it is not recommended.

We have the Highlander, and it's a great vehicle.

Consumer reports rates the Highlander as the top mid sized SUV. Pilot is 5th. Both are recommended, both have predicted owner satisfaction of 4/5 (that is really good), Highlander has 4/5 reliability rating, Pilot is 3/5.
Probably hard to go wrong with either but the Highlander is probably your better buy.

Both great choices.
We are driving a 2003 Highlander approaching 200,000 miles and still running great. Highest recommendation.
Our daughter has a Pilot and loves it. I’ve driven it and like it too. But Highlander... because.
Currently also driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue; love it!!!

While torque steer is nowhere near as bad in cars as it used to be the increase in horsepower over the years has kept it alive,
My Edge Sport with the twin turbo 2.7 torque steers like a mofo. Kinda wish they made it in rwd just due to that.
ETA: As for OP's question, I prefer the Highlander, but the extra cargo space of the Pilot is enticing. As most have said, you can't really go wrong with either.

In my experience Toyota will have the better tech and look a bit nicer but the Honda will have more space and be tad more comfortable.
Either one is a good choice.

We looked at just about everything out there in July, and it came down to this exact same decision - Highlander or Pilot?
We bought a Pilot. Combination of factors - Pilot sits a little higher, seems more spacious on inside, and we have a great history of dependability with Honda.

Since they are both the same car....
The Toyota comes with 2 years free maintenance, and that would push it over the top for me.

Thanks for the reports. I will be buying a Highlander before by end of the month.

2 yrs of free maintenance is merely about 4 free oil changes, tire pressure checks, and fluid checks. Not much is maintenance is required the first two yrs.

I'm solid on Toyota's. Best cars made.
Had a Celica with 287,000 driven like a high speed go cart miles when a girl ran all over me and totaled it.
Had a Supra with 200,000 HARD miles...like a race car miles on it when I sold it.
Have a 300,000 mile every day driver Camry sitting in the driveway. It is about get traded in most likely on a 4Runner
