re: How Government-Guaranteed Student Loans Killed the American Dream for Millions

The point is that I'm okay with really smart, poor people becoming lawyers and doctors and engineers if they want to, even if they don't have the means to get scholarships/aid.
Posted on 2/26/19 at 3:28 pm to ell_13
But if they are really smart enough to be some successful doctors and lawyers and their parents are poor they’ll get grants and scholarships for undergrad. If they complete that and get accepted to grad school then I could justify a loan
Posted on 2/26/19 at 3:31 pm to yellowfin
yes there are cheap options for undergrad where tuition is smaller and scholarships are more plentiful for elite students
then spend your money on grad school
lots of kids in gifted with whom i graduated made that deal with their parents to slum it at LSU

So you think they should take loans to go to college when they weren’t motivated enough to find the free money that’s out there?
That doesn’t make any sense to me

they weren’t motivated enough
They were motivated enough to work hard at school and their grades to end up with 4.0s and 30+ ACT scores some while working, too. They applied for plenty of aid. But not enough to cover where they wanted to go for undergrad (Texas for 2 and Tulane for another). They got some but not nearly what some C- average student got who had her mother writing her applications to every grant they could access along with some ridiculous schools like Brown, Georgetown, NYU, UCB all while getting the app fees waved.

They just need to make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy.
Then they need to make the loan based on degree and income potential like any other loan it should be based on risk.
Yeppppppppp

Student loans for private college should only be available in the amount that public schools cost.
Posted on 2/26/19 at 3:53 pm to ell_13
If you have to borrow money for your education then you shouldn’t be considering any of those schools in your post.

Ocasio-Cortez majored in international relations and economics at Boston University, graduating cum laude in 2011
And yet is stupid enough to believe this is a good idea.

The sweeping "Green New Deal" proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., could cost as much as $93 trillion, or approximately $600,000 per household, according to a new study co-authored by the former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office

Huh? I had a 3.8 with a 31 and didn't have to pay shite just about anywhere. I did have the congressional scholarship for Tulane though, my others didn't cover it all. That shite is expensive.

Where did you actually go to school and when?
I graduated 5th in my class from a pretty good high school by Louisiana standards, over a 4.0, 32 ACT, and didn’t have to pay a dime to LSU in terms of tuition and got a stipend. However, at a lot of places, like say the university of Miami, I got 2/3rd tuition scholarship and that’s it.
Did you know people to get that almost full ride at Tulane?

or allow them to negotiate on interest. Fall on hard times, that interest clock keeps ticking and they won't budge.

Yeah I was set up for the honors college with a stipend.

My local congressman. Each has a yearly scholarship to give. I was set to have his for 3 years. They can only give to one student at a time and the previous guy's senior year was my freshman year.

The most important aspect of that article, has yet to be reiterated in 6 pages...
It is absolutely embarrassing how little many people my age know about personal finance or economics. They are things that will effect everybody's life, yet they aren't taught in schools at all unless you go to college and study business.... More people I went to school with could recite physics formulas or read a book written in Spanish than explain how a credit card works. Its also the reason why liberalism is so strong in the younger generation. Nobody has ever learned about the driving forces in economics.

Second, parents and school systems should stress economic literacy so that young people better understand the concepts of resources, scarcity, and prices. We also need to teach our youth about personal finances, interest, and budgeting so they understand that borrowing a large amount of money that only generates a small level of income is not a sound investment.

Every state legislator has that same scholarship to give out

Exactly. Each has one per student per year.
