All of these price expectations are ridiculous. I just got my ring a few months ago. I don't even know the size of the center diamond. I never asked. Don't care. Not very large but surrounded by small diamond and sapphires. It's a 1910 art deco ring we found at an estate jeweler, and I fell in love with it. It's very unique, and I get compliments on it all the time. Buy something she will love, and don't worry about the size and the price expectations.

All this makes me want to throw up. Spend the fricking money on a down payment for a new house. A fricking ring? Are we really still that ridiculous?
I did both in a 2 month span. Bone dry after
3 years later I'm still married, but sold the house.

Not everyone wants a house right when they get married. They prefer to have the mobility that renting offers.
Also, as someone else said, rings and diamonds are just like other luxury items in most people's lives. Do you really need a vehicle that is 40k+? Couldn't you just buy a used car for 5k, that does the same job?

are you sad no one has given you a ring yet liz?

Is it crazy to drop 12-15k
I think it's crazy to drop that on a ring. You'll be setting the bar very high for the future. I tend to think that spoiling a girl can make her feel entitled and will only do damage in the long run.

Or one of them already owns a home that they will move into.

Agreed. And if the couple has the money and it won't hurt them financially...why not?

I would have freaked out if my SO had spent that kind of money on a ring. I can do a lot with 15K, and I can't imagine just wearing it on my hand everyday instead of building for the future.

how large a diamond is on your wives ring?
About as big as her sub zero refrigerator.

if a chick is telling you it HAS to be a certain size or a certain amount of money spent on it...that's a red flag you might want to notice.
i don't know where this came from. She told me what cut she wants, that it. I'm the one who doesn't like to skimp on things.

My wife has 2 total carats worth of diamonds in her entire set and it is apraised for about 3500. We paid a little less though.

And you could also drive a 20 year old Toyota Camry, but I'm sure most people drive nicer cars than that.

I spent 12k and got a 1.5 cushion cut vvs1, platinum setting, and wedding band. Total of like 3 carats.
