My fav part of these threads is when everyone posts what they paid vs what it appraised for. There's a pattern

Went ring shopping yesterday. Tried selling me a $25k ring, BUT they were doing a special and would sell it for $15K. I just laughed and told the gf nope.

As hard as it is not to give her something great, there's no way I'm spending that much on a ring. Hoping to find something nice and still take her on vacation.

This is a monthly thread on TD.

Your going to get the OT poors claiming you shouldn't spend more than 5k, the Money board Jews saying you should buy used and have something with equity, then the fake OT ballers claiming anything less than 30k is garbage.

Good luck!

I spent 16k on 1.75ct with an additional 1ct of small diamonds wrapped around the band and the center diamond.

Cut and color are the most important. If you can't see the imperfections without a microscope, then who gives s frick!

To me at the end of the day i dont think the average person pays THAT much attention to a ring.

after the initial excitement and showing the ring off here and there when it first happens then it really doesnt matter.

I cant tell you what a single one of the women in my life (mom, mother in law, grandmas, aunts, and friends) rings looks like. To me its so overdone and made into such a big deal that its stupid.

But thats just my opinion. Others can have different opinions i really dont care. But i have no issue admitting im not an OT baller and dont need to try to act like one with some huge ring

My wife gets comments on her ring fairly often. Guys don't pay attention to that kinda shite, but the females definitely do.

but no one is going to hold a jeweler's loupe to the ring

I did

Not because she gives a shite, it's because I wanted to learn more about what I was buying. The jeweler was a family friend so I knew I was getting ripped off, I just wanted to know.

You don't have to necessarily have a giant rock to get comments on your ring. I get comments often on my ring because of the setting, and my ring is tiny by OT baller standards

.6 carats for $1800 when I was a 20 yo college student. She gets comments on the size and how they would've thought she'd have traded up. "But it wouldn't be my engagement ring then." is all she answers. She's never asked for a bigger ring or complained. Not materialistic and our marriage has lasted longer than all those expensive rings. So, 20 years of marriage and a $1800 ring seems like a pretty damn good investment.

My wife's ring isn't small, but I think the most comments she gets are based upon the shape of her diamond (pear shape) vs size.

I cringe when a girl says she plans on upgrading in the future.

Her reward is getting everything she wants now. She married me before I was a baller and put up with everything in between.

Diamonds are an artificially inflated market but I know you can't explain that rationally to women. Couple that with divorce rates and it just seems like a horrible investment.

I'm a woman and I understand that. I even told my husband how overpriced diamonds are. I didn't see any point in wasting money on something like that because I am not a material person. My wedding set is the only jewelry I wear.

Perhaps you may think it it odd but I did not want my husband to buy an engagement ring. I already had a 2 carat solitaire that my late fiance gave me. So I told my husband he could just buy me a ring guard (as a wedding band) to go with it, rather than wasting money to buy another diamond solitaire. We put the money we saved into paying off our house.

My husband knew my late fiance and is perfectly fine with me wearing the ring since the ring means a lot to me. So he bought me the ring-guard that I wanted and we are both very happy with this choice.

ETA my fiance got an amazing deal on my ring because he was very close with a jeweler.

Well my center stone is only half a carat. It's what he could afford at the time(his company was threatening layoffs for his entire dept). My setting could easily hold a 1 carat center stone. So I'm a horrible person if my husband wants to get me a larger center stone for a future anniversary gift? I would never allow him to change up the setting, just the center stone.

I think mine is .5 karats. Simple, but pretty the wedding band.

My wife's ring is a little more than a carat and I paid $3700 just for the stone. The clarity and color graded out to flawless.
i gotta give you props, bro

Not for scoring such a lux stone at a literally unbelievable price, but for waking up every day and facing the world with your missing chromosome. so brave. and bless that woman's heart for saying "yes".

Here's what a real 1 carat, color D, flawless diamond costs, and this is a great deal.

$23k
