Sure it can be, but not that often. An MBA is closer to a run of the mill masters than it is to a professional degree most of the time. Since there are hundreds of programs and tons of people with them, that makes sense.
That said, there are absolutely MBA programs that have the prestige, rigor, and job prospects to put it above lesser professional degrees.
There are a lot of factors in trying to judge a postgrad degree, but one I tend to use is how consuming it is. Do you rearrange your life plans for a couple (or more) years, often moving to another city or state? Or do you pick from 5 schools within 30 miles and adjust your schedule for 18 months?

It's a degree that's worth more in the social capital you develop through your classmates and alumni contacts than through actual knowledge.
It's also a nice source of revenue for universities.

Depends on the program. I have mine from Troy. I'm not sure how they're doing it now, but back in 2003-04 you could get a General MBA, or specialize in Accounting, IT, or some other focus. The accounting focus basically gave you the hours for the CPA exam. It was 12 classes, and all of the focuses required the same 6 basics. Finance, Accounting, Econ, Marketing, Stats, and a Business Strategy class where you completed your comps and final exam for the program. The accounting focus added graduate level classes in Financial Accounting, Auditing, Business Law, Tax, and Accounting Information Systems.

I think graduating law school is more prestigious, followed by Engineering, then MBA, however that just my opinion. If you are considering getting an MBA, I believe you should weigh whether it is really worth spending another 2 years or so going to school. Consider the amount of money you are going to spend furthering your education on how much of a boost in salary you will get for furthering your education. Also does the school you received the MBA from make it more or less prestigious? And does the prestige make it more valuable?
For instance how would you rate value of an MBA from these schools, Factor in what you benefit from the tuition paid (Based on 2 year program-4 semesters):
LSU $62,800
Tulane $72,000
ULL $20,392
ASU online $53,904
me personally I don't have an MBA and don't see myself getting one, but if I did I'd probably go with ULL, simply because you probably get more bang for your buck. I pulled all the numbers by googling each school. I didn't add in any fees or room and board.

Why is prestige important? I've never seen an MBA be a hindrance for success in an individual's career. I view it as another arrow in the quiver. I think less than 5% of the population have an MBA.

Totally dependent on which school it's from

Tulane MBA is up there from a prestige point of view especially if you want a job in New York on the trading platforms.

Yes because it depends where you go and how well you do.

Your average state school MBA graduate probably has a decent job....so in that respect it is probably better than a law degree at the moment.

I lost out on a promotion in my previous company to a guy who was a moron... but he had an MBA with TAMU

I think it is more of a box checker degree to say that you have a masters.
Eta: Some jobs and some companies might require at least a masters before hiring or offering a promotion is what I mean. I question what is actually learned in an MBA program especially if you already have a business type degree. Might be of more use if you are coming from a more technical bachelor's degree.

I know a lot of dumb people who have graduate degrees, including MBAs. It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean.
If someone has worked IRL and then gets an MBA, it is valued much higher than a kid going straight from undergrad to grad school.
