I'm not suggesting that it would be comfortable. I'm suggesting that our definition of the bare necessities has shifted significantly over the last 15-20 years.

Curious, was there no way possible to focus on paying off the student loans ($18,000/yr) before family and increasing $18,600 in mortgage costs? Will the degree(s) start generating the cash flow that justified the student loan (ROI)?
No. I finished school in 2019. My wife was only working part time between 2020-2022 while getting her NP degree, so we were basically living off one income.
If we would have waited until student loans were paid to start a family, we would have been 36-37, which the older you when you have kids, the more risk there is of something going wrong.

So your wife's take home is more then 1600 bucks.
What's the difference in (-$1600) vs what she brings in. The take into account the cost of travel and wear and tear on an auto to work then the extra time to do chores around the house so both of you can relax and spend time w/ the kids once you get home.
It's a choice and a lifestyle change. She may loose and identity as a individual but the time she spends and the nurturing she can give them vs a stranger making $12 an hour has no price tag unless she's bringing home a min of 4k after taxes its not worth it

You are right.
I could have moved our family into the trailer park, gotten a flip phone, and drive a 2005 dodge minivan so we can survive off one income.
Live the same life after 8 years of school that I could have lived being a cashier at walmart

Or just not purchased a new home, take vacations, save for your kids' college tuition when you're still paying off your own, or have pets you can't afford.
Again, societal norms have told us that these things are necessary when, in the past, they were considered luxuries.

If you’ve got 2 kids in daycare it’s probably cheaper for your wife to stay home.
Day care is expensive as hell and they know people will pay it. Yay destruction of traditional familial roles.
Plenty women out there making more than their husbands. Mostly doubtful that it's cheaper for her to stay home.

My grandson is almost 2, never spent a day in a daycare. It’s taken all of us and our in-laws too, but we’ve managed it. I’m not sure how people do it these days. It’s amazing what it costs.
