Multiple witness statements up on BBC.

Apparently there were many cases of people trying to throw/drop children to safety (to both rescue workers and civilians).

Last I saw it was only at 6 deaths with 20+ injured. Watching that crap last night I would have guessed dozens and dozens burned alive.

Also supposedly there was a major renovation/update in 2016 to address the list of complaints/concerns.

ETA: as of now, 6 confirmed dead, 74 injured, and "no idea" how many unaccounted for.

I have no idea how a fire that huge could only kill 6 people. Earlier reports had multiple people diving out of windows at high elevations. If it's only six people that's a miracle.

Hopefully the smoke would have gotten them first.

Hopefully not, but that's probably only the bodies that have been recovered so far. I imagine there are lots more.

Survivors were saying no one from the top three floors could get down. Aparently started by a refrigerator on the 2nd floor.

West London. Sky News live feed has been covering it all day. Horror for those trapped inside.

Even as few as 12 dead would be amazing.

From what I've read today - There were no sprinklers in this particular building....nor are there in many others. A few high-rise blocks have been "retrofitted" with sprinklers.

It's mind boggling that "adequate fire safety" according to building code standards means "constructed of concrete with heavy fire doors everywhere"...and hence the "stay in your unit in case of fire" signage.

That is BLATANT "fire safety measures are to protect the property, not the people" stuff right there. Sprinklers should be mandatory at least above the level where standard firefighting equipment is unable to reach with water from the ground.

ETA:

Also the fact that even newly-constructed high-rise blocks are only government required to have ONE staircase.

Some people must be getting paid big-time to turn a blind eye to code changing proposals.

Public (Council) housing the the UK is a strange hybrid. Many of the flats are owned by individuals or private real estate companies. This is due to Thatcher era rules that allowed families living in the flats to purchase at discounted rates. Many of these families then sold to private real estate investors who then rent the flats at very high rates. Many of these London Block Towers have market value rentals....a 2 BR flat goes for about 1800 pounds/ mo ($2300) in Grenfell.

BBC reporting that a building owned by the same company had a fire that quickly spread up the outside of the building over 5 stories last year. A report by the fire brigade WHICH WENT UNPUBLISHED stated that behind the metal exterior facing panels was mostly plywood and polystyrene...both highly flammable materials. This is ACCEPTABLE ACCORDING TO GOVT BUILDING CODE. Jeeeez.
