That is an ugly ridge. Also, any system that comes out of the Atlantic better curve north early or there could be issues.

If a storm doesn't turn north early, it rides under the ridge into the Gulf. Ridge moves out and the storm shoots north.

I'm willing to bet, even in extreme times as now down a the NHC, someone on staff must snicker every time they create a map that looks like this.
