For 500k you could take a 5000 vacation every year for 100 years.

Or take two 5000 vacations every year for 50 years.

Middle class vacation homes hardly ever make sense.

If you have more money than you know what to do with, then we're talking. But not about $500k.

If you spend $5k on a vacation, that's money you will never get back. Buy the $500K spot, and you can at least recoup some of the money (or even make a profit) if you ever sell. That seems to make sense to me if it's somewhere you love spending time, but I don't own a vacation home or have $500K to buy one. . . yet
