Or take two 5000 vacations every year for 50 years.

If you spend $5k on a vacation, that's money you will never get back. Buy the $500K spot, and you can at least recoup some of the money (or even make a profit) if you ever sell. That seems to make sense to me if it's somewhere you love spending time, but I don't own a vacation home or have $500K to buy one. . . yet
