I don't get it either. Mississippi has culture, as does Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, Hawaii, New Mexico, and everywhere you go.
Culture is the major component of every human civilization.

If you want to be closer to your parents move to Houston.

quote:Yes, but sometimes that isn't the place you were born and raised anymore. For instance, the NOLA I was born into and fell in love with no longer exists in the same qualitative form. Sure, it's there geographically, yes. And there are still a lot of wonderful people and things about it. But since moving away back in 1984, I've come to appreciate the good things I remember, the good that is still there, but also am grateful I don't have to live in the middle of all the corruption and crime and cultural/moral decay.
Home is where the heart is.
All that said, I do miss the food (esp. poboys, beignets, snowballs), the laughter and music and memories and familiarity. But I don't miss the potholes, the relentless humidity, the political corruption, the ignorance, the ever-present and growing violent crime rate, and the ridiculous cost of living (real estate).
If I were going to move back to Louisiana, I couldn't afford actual New Orleans; it would have to be Mandeville/Covington/Madisonville or Lafayette/Acadiana.

People that boast LA culture are the same people that vacation 1 week a year in Destin, FL & think it's the greatest.
Yeah, no.

I'm on board with you. I'm born and raised in rural Louisiana, thought it was god's gift to earth. Went to LSU and ULL. Then spent some time in Texas but am back in Louisiana for the current moment. I am just waiting for my moment to get back out of this state. Louisiana culture is great, and I'll carry it with me forever, especially in my cookbook, but this state lacks so much it is pathetic.

ypical response from people who have only ever lived in LA & nowhere else. The sheer small minded mentality that LA has to be the only place in the world with great culture is mind bottling...

He makes a good point though. I know people like that from LA.

We have a good bit in common.
Interesting how people who have actually LEFT this state understand just how much better the world is out there.
As soon as my wife's elder in the family dies off, we are gone back to Texas!

I lived in DC and Atlanta for 15 years. Came back to Baton Rouge to raise my family.
Zachary and other suburbs have great schools, but we use the private schools in BR. They're all pretty awesome from what I can tell.

I was born and raised in rural Louisiana and I thought it sucked, but to say that cookie cutter Texas has more culture than Louisiana is laughable.
Louisiana obviously has its flaws, but a lack of culture is not one of them.

Old Mandeville.
And don't get fooled by the Livingston Parish group wit their claims of it being this great place to live with awesome schools.

I wouldn't move back at least right now. I think given Louisiana's current leadership and economic climate, it's a couple of years into what could be a decade-long tail spin. It's sad to see.
If I were moving back, I'd go to Baton Rouge or Lafayette.

Blanchard, Benton or Stonewall.

I definitely know people like that, but that isn't who I am at all. I did actually go to Destin this past weekend, but that was far from my only vacation this year and I don't think it's the best place in the world.
I don't think that Louisiana is this great place by any means.

No one said or has likely ever said that Louisiana has a lack of culture.
Also, Texas is far less cookie cutter than you apparently know. Sure: Houston, Austin, San Antonio, & DFW are all shining examples of cookie cutter. But that's the testament to the growth & strong economy. Still PLENTY of culture in the big cities (just gotta know where to look) & all throughout south, central, east, & west texas.

I don't get why like these places so much, I get that they are nice and have great massive schools and feel the need for 65 million dollar high school football stadiums, but its because they are new cities. designed from the ground up. Cookie cutter houses and neighborhoods, filled with chain restaurants and shopping centers. Its all too fake for me. no culture, very few family restaurants, no history to the city no culture. like I said sure its nice but its way to fake for me. plus
WRONG on so many levels.

So you went visit your uncle and aunt one time in Katy and you automatically think the rest of the state is like that? Keeping up with the small mindedness I see

You can see that in parts of Allen and west Frisco especially. It's good if you have kids in schools (Frisco at least) but home prices are exploding and apartments are popping up like crazy, thanks in fact to the down times in the late 2000's when the land was sold from developers to commercial ones. And the California influx thanks to Toyota is sucking balls
McKinney is is under the same fate. Since named #1 place to live in the entire country home prices have skyrocketed and and so has the influx of transplants from North and West coast.

My uncle lives in DFW, not Katy
But no, I've been to Austin (twice), Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth all in the last two years. They aren't bad cities and there are great job opportunities out there, but they are all cookie cutter.
