It's just like life in Palm Springs/Palm Desert..it's Las Vegas just without all the "Vegas"

Dated a girl whose dad had a house in Scottsdale I've been plenty of times.
Almost moved out there for work... it was between Scottsdale or Miami.
It's nice. Everything is clean. But that comes at a price. Some would say "soul less" I suppose. Nice restaurants are in a planned urban space with like a parking garage and a valet.
Everyone is dressed to impress. It's pretty flashy and showy.
A lot of Californians are moving in and have been moving in.
Cost of living is insane. My friend is a surgeon out there and his wife is a dentist and he said he feels poor.
My job offer out there wasn't enough so I turned it down.
The people are hot, and young. A LOT of money.
It's like California but with a desert twist.... it's hard to pin down. ASU is there. But then there are a lot of old people. It is a place that still hasn't figured out its identity yet.
Towards the end I was leaning to Miami. I like the women more in Miami than I do in Scottsdale.
But in the end I picked neither.
My friend who moved out to Scottsdale said he misses Louisiana.
But again this is all personal. Flashy desert California-lite living might be for you.

The whole time I was there (Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Gilbert) I missed LA. Now that I'm back in LA I miss there

Your comment about getting a tan walking to your car was laughable (though you definitely need to watch out for the UV with all the blacktop and lack of cloud cover)
Tan lines. I'm fair skinned and started to avoid excessive sun exposure after ignoring the issue as a kid. In spite of my best efforts I did see real tan lines just from little bits of sun exposure in Arizona. I'm of Scandinavian background so that might be some of the issue (tan easily but naturally fair skinned without sun exposure).
Anyway, RE the OP I highly recommend the state in the October through April window and strongly recommend against being there in the summer months. If I have my shite together in a couple decades and retire I like the idea of Arizona or Florida in the winter and Montana or Alaska in the summer

If I could snap my fingers and move my small Virginia farm to somewhere outside Prescott, I'd do it. The amount of outdoor activities that are available are endless, Sedona's right there, etc.
Prescott is awesome but not really a secret anymore. Tons of retirees from SoCal moving there for the open land and lower prices. High desert with easy access to pine forests in the Bradshaw Mointains. Tons of outdoor activities. Awesome town square and downtown area. Decent shopping and easy access to Phoenix, Sedona and Flagstaff. A tiny regional airport with nonstop flights to Denver and LAX. Embry Riddle and Prescott College decent little schools. The traffic on 69 from before Prescott Valley all the way into town is awful though.

Well, there is some wildlife there.

Lake Havasu City is nice. It’s extremely hot in the middle of summer, but Lake Havasu makes up for the heat. The lake’s water level stays about the same no matter how low Lake Mead gets because it is the 2nd lake after the Hoover Dam. The lake water doesn’t feel as hot as lakes around here in the middle of summer. It’s 2 half hours from Vegas and 3 hours from Phoenix. It also has the London bridge. The bridge was tore down in London brick by brick numbered and shipped to the desert and rebuilt.
Stayed there with a friend for a month and loved it.

This is a true statement
Scottsdale is heaven. I don't think I saw a fat person when I was there. I say a few semi over weight people 20lbs but no fatties
My only complaint is the amount of plastic surgery on women over the age of 40 was very sad.

Thanks for the 70's song flashback that's now stuck in my head.
Joking aside, the AZ high country is incredible.

I live in southern Arizona , the heat is bearable for a Louisiana native like me.
There are tons of mountains and trails to explore. Tons of public land. it’s pretty redneck too which I like. Tons of vintage cars. Legal weed if you want to unwind on the weekend.
I have no desire to visit Phoenix. I stick to the Sky islands . Hiking , skiing , hunting, ( fishing sucks arse) , good Mexican food. I’m a happy camper but to each his own.

I enjoyed living there for the 4 years I did I but prefer more greenery.

This is the key.
In the USA almost every place is “a nice place” depending on the individual and what THEY do to make their world “nice”.
This is why people argue about places. It’s simply different mentality in adjusting to suit one’s personality and nature. 2 individuals can be diametrically different in opinion on the same place.

As others have mentioned, water is a major issue. Not sure if the higher elevations have the same issue but I would not want to hold property in the desert areas long term.
It’s not just the population growth. The agricultural interests are draining the aquifers.
