the kid that was allowed to cuss may have had tourettes? i had one as an AP in our school. as a football coach, we had a sped kid at RB. great kid, good athlete, couldn’t remember which way to go on plays. our OC had enough one day and when the kid busted another assignment our OC yelled “ get that special ed mother f….. of my field!” kid never busted another play.

Also, the very idea that BIP’s exist is ridiculous.
Besides the actual decades of research behind them?
Yep, I’ve seen tons of “research based” nonsense come and go in education in my career. It’s practically an annual thing now. Something is introduced in the fall that is going to make a huge difference in student learning, behavior, whatever, until it doesn’t. It’s scrapped and never heard from again. Fall comes and there’s something else brought in. ODD is bullshite and is nothing more than a free pass to behave however you want with no consequences.

I thought placement in regular classrooms was supposed to be limited to when it didn’t cause issues or disruptions with other kids abilities to learn
When my son was in 2nd grade he sat in front of a Sped student who had a para with him at all times to keep him from biting, kicking, and scratching other kids. She didn’t watch him every second so it was a constant battle for my son to avoid getting bitten and drooled on or hit, but also avoid getting in trouble for being mean to the Sped kid. ETA i don’t think the teacher or para were trained to handle that type of disability. That child actually was disabled and didn’t know right from wrong.

Gentrification in Austin has pushed a lot of low income folks out east to Manor and Pflugerville. Manor isn't the small town it used to be.

I think you're lumping BIP's which have been used successfully for generations with the crap that the district or schools use and change each year because someone wants to prove themselves to the county. BIP's aren't meant to be a permanent fix. They need to be adjusted at each IEP meeting or when the behavior begins to reoccur.

Who said anything about ODD?

Mainstreaming was a terrible idea. The education system is addicted to being a social justice group.

I hate these photos where I'm looking up some violent primitive's flared nostrils. There should be a warning.

When oh when will we ever begin the conversation on restrictive knife control?

Manor historically has been a minority town. There is a whole lot of majority folks there now.

In my recent experience, ODD has been the rationale for creating BIP’s for recurring problem behavior in students. I believe it to be a quack “disorder” invented by leftist child advocates to keep the worst of the worst behavior students in school. It only takes a few to have a big impact, negatively, on the entire school.
I think that you and I are on the same page, it’s just semantics.

Had a similar situation with a SPED running back when I was coaching. He simply couldn’t differentiate left from right. Eventually OC began wrapping his wrists for every practice and game and writing an R and an L on the tape. Problem was solved, and the kid wanted to play badly enough that he didn’t perceive it as a stigma.
