I'm afraid you're looking in a mirror.
I've said the same thing all along, that there may have been aspects of Cobain's music that were influenced by other bands, but compositionally he was mostly influenced by the Beatles (and I didn't need any quotes to come to that conclusion, by the way, all I had to do was listen to "About A Girl,"
"Something In The Way," the harmonies in "On A Plain," and "Drain You,").
You are the one who insisted that the only band he was influenced by was the Pixies.

There's a reason for that.
Some kids rubbed Limburger cheese in this guy's mustache while he was sleeping, so when he woke up he looked around to see what stunk. Went into the various rooms of the house, wandered around, finally opened the window, stuck his head out, and took a deep breath.
Crestfallen, he exclaimed, "THE WHOLE WORLD STINKS!"
That's you right now.
You'll never not live among stupid people, because unlike the cheese that that guy could wash out of his mustache, you're stuck with your stupidity for life.
Sorry.

I dunno if I would agree with that.

I'd probably agree with that.

I guess if you completely ignore:
the millions of records sold when he was still alive
him being called "the voice of a generation" while he was still alive
Nirvana completely changing the music landscape while he was still alive
them being called "the biggest band in the world" while he was still alive
etc.
etc.
etc.

I'm going to guess you're a PT poster - I'll look it up after and edit.

Imagine using Google AI as your single source of information about someone's influences.
Imagine not reading one or two of the numerous interviews the person gave, while alive, when that person stated his influences.
Imagine disregarding quotes from that person's own bandmates about who influenced that person.
Imagine then saying others are "less intelligent" for not accepting your Google AI as the end all be all source.
Then imagine the smallness of the person who would do all that.

Well BabyTac's knowledge of 90's pop culture is unmatched so it must be true.
In the mid 90s every kid on earth had a copy of Ace of Base, Garth Brooks and Nevermind.

I've just never found this saga all that interesting.

That’s very reductive.
Have you seen Soaked in Bleach (2015)? There was a lot more to it than what you state.
And if this reporting is remotely accurate, it’s more like a heavy heroin user took or was given a dose 4-6X what a typical heavy dose would be, and as his organs and bodily tissue were shutting down deprived of blood flow, he managed to wrangle a long shotgun to his head and pull the trigger. But there’s even more detail than that, that’s just the part that jumps out to me.

I disagree. I'm not saying there isn't enough to dig into and make this interesting if you're so inclined. That's probably the case with any high profile incident. But I think the overwhelming majority of it is reconstructed and parsed well after the fact.
A guy who was notoriously clinically depressed and a junkie and who tried to kill himself a couple of months earlier and who many in his inner circle thought would inevitably die of OD or suicide...it just doesn't call out for decades of scrutiny, IMO.
Real life is messy and interesting and I understand that there are entire industries built on subsequently dissecting things that were, in all likelihood, probably understood fully and in context immediately after the event. But I nonetheless personally don't see the fascination with this one.

I don’t know how old you people are, but Cobain and Nirvana were one of the top bands in the world and Kurt was a megastar before his death.
I’m 45, I never said he didn’t make good music . I think he is overrated due to his death. I don’t think that is a controversial statement. Was he a megastar for a couple of years in the 90s? Sure. My point is that because of his death we never saw him fail in music like others have. He isn’t the only megastar who was great and on top of the world at one point. But others who has his kind of talent and success have lived long enough to become shells/parodies of themselves.

Like Dave Grohl...I see what you are saying now.
Being honest here Dave Grohl sucks now.

Nirvana wasn’t even the third best band from their city.
It boggles my mind why this dude and that band get so much love. They were ok.
Nothing about them stood out. They weren’t some technically proficient band.
GG Allin is far superior to Kurt Cobain.

That's a matter of opinion, of course.

Because Cobain wrote songs that prioritized melody (and that was his Beatles influence showing) and people like great melodies. Also (IMO) because the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video perfectly captured the dividing line between metal and grunge and it hit at exactly the right time.
I agree that they were mere mortals and not demigods (which is what the music media made them out to be), but the same is true for whoever you think the three better bands from Seattle are. (Pearl Jam in particular is a band that I liked back then, but I hear now and think to myself, What the hell was I thinking back then?" Eddie Vedder is simply ridiculous.)

if that was true they never would have gained popularity. I'm telling you, it was the melodies.

Dave Grohl is a pretty good drummer. But even if he wasn't, so what?
There's a whole lot more to music than technical proficiency. In fact, they were a re-hashed punk band, and lack of technical proficiency is kind of the point of punk.

GG Allin is far superior to Kurt Cobain.
O.k. Frank Zappa is far superior to either/both. Doesn't mean everyone has to like him better than both, and in fact, Zappa himself understood that the "better" the music, the fewer people would be able to resonate with it, especially if technical proficiency = "better" to you. The more avant garde you are, the fewer people are going to get it.
Personally, I love R.L Burnside, and he has no technique at all to speak of. Technique is just one tool with which to express oneself.
