I'm reading this right now:
Pretty interesting.
quote:
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and now a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, The Emperor of All Maladies is a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence.
Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers...
Pretty interesting.

I strongly recommend "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It's an Abraham Lincoln biography that focuses on his strength as a politician.
If you are a fan of Revolutionary history, "John Adams" by David McCullough and "Washington: A Life" by Ron Chernow are both excellent reads.

Five-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower was arguably the single most important military figure of World War II. For many historians, his memoirs of this eventful period of U.S. history have become the single most important record of the war. Crusade in Europe tells the complete story of the war as Eisenhower planned and lived it. Through his eyes, the enormous scope and drama of the war—strategy, battles, moments of fateful decision—become fully illuminated in all their fateful glory.

I saw a couple of mentions of Rebel Yell by Sam Gwynne, which is an absolutely fabulous biography of Stonewall Jackson. An earlier book that he wrote that you will never forget if you read it is Empire of the Summer Moon which is about the Comanche tribe and their resistance to the westward expansion of the white man. The book is "badass" and a great read.

Mein Kampf is a piece of shite. Hitler = terrible writer. I recommend Lawrence of Arabia's autobiography "Seven Pillars of Wisdom."

Will have to check it out, going to be busy reading all these!
I get obsessed with a subject for about a week or two at a time so the variance in topics is beneficial

If you like the old west you should check out Blood and Thunder about Kit Carson or A Terrible Glory about Custer. That one gives a different perspective on the man. Both were great reads.

Will check those out, I don't think I am as interested in the Indian wars as I am in the outlaws and their interactions with each other and crimes. Like I said, I know most of what we think we know are embellished campfire stories, but I'd like to learn the real stories...
Similar to the Caribbean pirates, I want to know more about how it really was, not how we see them today
