These models need to give me an idea of whether or not I should cancel my trip to Austin next weekend

Could very well be a sticky situation. Depending on what happens, you should be hoping for snow. A half inch of sleet/freezing rain the op shows would make that trip impossible.

I just took a look at the model runs from last night.
So far, they have the BR area (north shore and southwest through Iberville Parish to be precise) with ONE INCH of freezing rain and sleet. That in and of itself would spell total disaster when considering our power infrastructure.
Combine that with the temperatures in the newest runs and you very well can expect catastrophic problems related to the elderly and babies living in homes without a fireplace or generator. Depending on which model you look at, our HIGHS would be from the low to upper 20s with lows in the mid teens.
All of you who keep pointing out that these are model runs so far in advance need to stop kidding yourselves because they keep trending in the same direction - a significant to crippling ice event combined with a very cold airmass. Of course it’s a week out and will still change but they’ve all been super consistent so far.
I’m going get a couple portable heaters and gas for the generator today just in case. Can’t hurt to be prepared before the rush hits later.

I’m not buying the sense of urgency quite yet, but two things....
1) I’m going buy fire wood tomorrow
2) after the year we’ve had in LC, and if something like this were to happen, I called it back in September. 2 hurricanes back to back and IceMageddon over the winter.
I’d like a cookie.

All the 10 day forecasts I see are showing mid 40s highs and upper 20s lows Friday and Saturday for the Northshore.

Right, preparing a week early does seem silly but imagine how everyone around here will react as soon as local media starts throwing out these numbers. We can’t handle hurricane prepping without wiping the stores clean. I can’t imagine what everyone will do when preparing for a potential major ice storm. I may look into some additional firewood too since I’m starting to run low.

We go through this in every single weather thread. Model runs are NOT forecasts. They are model runs - nothing more nothing less. If these trends continue, you can expect the temps to go down and ice to be introduced to the forecasts.

I’m guessing the forecast won’t show highs in the 20s because 1) not all models are showing that and 2) climatology favors that not happening. Getting closer to the day and if models agree your “forecast” will be updated
