Remember the last cold snap when people were starting threads about pipes and running their water and such? Yeah, this is the type weather and stretch of sub-freezing temps that warrants that.

I get why people down here are so jumpy about wrapping pipes because I get yelled at when I say no when I get told to wrap them because Jay Grymes said it's going to be 32 that night. Bunch of clueless wives who don't know how anything works. But this extended period of time would warrant taking action.

Those are probably the safest ones to use in my opinion.

Yeah, I use them in my shop and another building I own. I don't always fully heat my shop, so I just turn the heater on low in the bathroom, and it prevents any problems. I have another small one that I use in our laundry room when it gets really cold, primarily just for peace of mind.

Of course, they are useless in an ice event that knocks out power.

Not if you have a generator. Everyone in south Louisiana should have a generator that's capable of at least 6,000 running watts in my opinion. An interlock kit is simple to install on your main feed outside and if you're not comfortable with doing it yourself, it's about $700 to have installed by a professional. It's essentially a legal and safe way of back feeding your home and much cheaper than a transfer switch. I had one installed on my panel last April and although I haven't needed to use it yet, the peace of mind that comes with it and my new 8,000 running watts generator is priceless.

Yep, it has to do with how long you're going to be below freezing. If it is more than 24 hours without getting above freezing is usually the threshold for me. Just dipped into the 20s for a couple hours at night and getting back to the mid 40s the next day is alright. 20s for a day or more warrants attention. I'm farther north than most of yall, not by a whole lot, but enough to have to deal with it a few times a year.

I remember all the New Orleans baws having issues with their pipes under their houses.

Right. I've heard some people protect their pipes when it gets to the upper 20s at night and that's just ridiculous. Upper 20s for a few hours is not going to freeze your pipes. Even low to mid 20s should be ok if you're in a brick or well-insulated home on a slab. It's these potential teens and 20s for 48 hours straight that kills pipes on many homes - brick or not.

Not if you have a generator.

If I lived down there, or close to the coast, I'd have one for sure. I'm in North AL, and have considered it. Particularly, after April 27, 2011. We didn't have damage to our home, but didn't have power for almost 5 days. The last time we lost it for ice was when I was a kid. When my Pops was sick, I was going to have a whole-house installed in my parent's house because he was reliant on so much stuff that needed electricity. Unfortunately, he passed before we really needed to do it.

Damn, sorry to hear that. But yea, I'd highly recommend a generator pretty much in every part of the country since they're so nice to have when you need it.

Thanks. It was a few years ago, though. He had ALS, and it progressed quickly. He lasted less than a year after diagnosis. I hate that disease, and I hate for anyone to have to go through that. When fishfighter passed, it messed me up for a few days. His was almost identical to my Pops. It just sucks.

Except little to no precipitation so overall this one would be much better from a power outages standpoint.

I have a 1800 W generator.
Just to run refrigerator, some lights, etc.
I wish I had gas at the house for a heater.

Not all at the same time with an 1800 watt generator. You could maybe run the fridge for a few hours then run something a small heater for a few hours but 1800 watts isn't going to do much honestly. Hell, I have a radiator heater from Walmart that alone uses 1500 watts.

Looks like you can just about count on a serious cold snap.

For precipitation, we will have to wait a few more days. So far there hasn't been much (if any) snow with the runs. Its either rain or ice.

Yes, don't worry about this at all. In fact, don't even pay attention to this thread or your local weather between now and next Friday since it's safe to say you can bbq steaks for your valentine next weekend.
