LSU votes to bring back Standardized testing today…

What is this referring to? My son had to take the ACT to go to LSU 7 years ago. Did LSU stop requiring ACT scores since then?

It was a policy of F King Alexander and continued by Tate.

“Testing optional”

Immediately after Landry wins Tate gone woody gone Kelly gone we get kiffin rousse verge and dalton and the first order of business from rousse and dalton is to reinstate testing.

I’m not tired of winning yet.

I'm so thrilled by this news! This is our state's flagship university. If students can't get in on the first try, they can do coursework at one of our other schools and transfer later. So proud of my alma mater for reversing course on bad policy.

I guess all of the shenanigans that happened at LSu during the fall of 2025 helped bring about this.

We're getting away from this...

It is truly amazing when you think about it how much the country went completely insane by the 2020 one-two punch of the COVID/George Floyd government psy-op that led to decisions like these.

My kids went to 5 different universities. Some really top schools.

LSU was by far the best all around experience.

In what regard is sending your kid to LSU sacrificing their future? LSU is still an awesome college experience that can help you build connections and line you up for a great job. If the kid is on track to get into Stanford or an Ivy League school that would be one thing but he has not said that’s the case.

True, but LSU needs to improve standards first. Sending one good student into a sea of mediocrity is more likely to negatively impact the good student than it is to lessen the mediocrity.

In the last years a lot of die hard LSU fans, including us, sent our kids away and often to rival schools. They are throwing money at kids who would normally be a lock for LSU. We weren’t sacrificing her education when LSU seemed very committed to the path they’d chosen going back to at least 2018. I am so happy to see that they may be changing course. I just wish it had happened sooner.

Good. Maybe there will be fewer shootings at Unity Field next season.

Standardized testing isn’t perfect. But it’s the best way to measure student achievement across multiple schools, regions, and states where academic quality varies.

A 3.7 GPA and a top 10 ranking in one high school is simply not equal to a 3.7 GPA and top 10 ranking at another.

Which makes the following about the 2024 fall freshman class at least interesting but not definitive on how it relates to HS quality.

In the fall of 2024 around 1148 of the new fall freshman class enrollees with 4.0s in HS submitted a test score while around 1793 of the 4.0s did not submit a test score (Using “around” because number is based on a % which LSU only went out to 2 decimal points.) I haven’t found a similar report for fall of 2025 freshmen yet.

This doesn’t mean that all of the 1793 did poorly, but
they likely scored below the score LSU said would help (based on prior years admissions which I think was the average or just above the average score for prior class). I would also assume the 1148 scored at or most likely above that score (and in the highest tier of submitted scores), but there is no report that I have seen that shows what or if they gained anything as far as being rewarded more scholarships or whatever.

Feels like LSU promoted a high risk low reward with 4.0s submitting their scores.

- in 2024 43.08% of the new freshman enrollees who did not submit scores had 4.0 GPAs.

- in 2024 30.51% of the new freshman enrollees who did submit scores had 4.0 GPAs, and that comes pretty close to the numbers of the enrollees submitting scores who scored in the top tier for either the SAT or ACT.

It still isn’t great, but flips when going down below 4.0s with more submitting than not. 899 with 3.75 to 3.99 GPAs submitted a score versus 814 who did not submit a score. 759 submitted scores versus 633 who did not submit scores out of those with 3.5 to 3.74 GPAs, and then it starts to move closer together between 3.24 to 3.49 GPAs with 557 submitting scores versus 538 not submitting.

What has been driving submitted scores by freshman enrollees to become only 47% of the 2024 freshmen enrollees at LSU was the 4.0 GPA students which just seems off to me. The ones from 3.24 to 3.99 aren’t helping a lot, but they are at least a little above a 50% to mid 50%s submission rates.

... because the lack of standardized testing has contributed to the declining standards overall.

And unjustly rewarding of scholarships that are administered by LSU along with honors college admission.

LSU took away a true independent and objective tool out of its process which also removes it from being used to question those subjective decisions made by the admissions committee. The process below could always be used to look at individual applications, but doing it in bulk while favoring some over others would stand out if scores were noticeable lower than those getting less.

Then Tate abused this by pushing huge increases in enrollment by focusing on recruiting Pell grant eligible blacks and out of state students who could take advantage of not having the GPA or high schools objectively compared to others.

If anyone believes the increase in blacks while decreasing whites came from them paying their own way or happening with increasing academic achievement you are the fool Tate thought you were. LSU accepts a ton of applications. They accepted over 34,000 out of the 47,000 HS applicants for the fall of 2024 with 7,925 actually enrolling. Outside of the kids who always wanted to go to LSU it’s about the money handed out by LSU along with Pell grant focus that is causing the demographic shift.

quote:

LSU has implemented a full-file comprehensive review for the past few admissions cycles. This process, utilized by most of LSU’s peers nationally, considers many aspects of a student’s academic performance including high school grades, rigor of curriculum, grade trends, grades in courses related to major interest, a letter of recommendation, optional essay, activities & awards.

LSU considers numerous factors for each applicant. Removing testing means we are considering only one less factor for students who choose not to have this represented in their application. Our admissions committee is trained to understand the context of a high school curriculum and how a student’s performance in high school will predict their potential for success at LSU.

If you choose not to submit test scores, you will not be viewed negatively.

… Scholarships will continue to be reviewed in a holistic way, similar to the admissions evaluation. If a student chooses not to submit a test score as a part of this process, their application will still be reviewed for university-administered scholarships. Generally, students who fall in the top half of LSU’s applicant pool have historically qualified for scholarships.

Similar to admission, we consider a student’s curriculum rigor, grades, letter of recommendation, and class rank (if available). If test scores are selected to be included with the application, they will also be considered.

… Students applying for the LSU Ogden Honors College who elect to be test optional will be considered for admission and scholarships, including Stamps.

It won't do any good if you have admissions using "holistic" decision making in order to "right past wrongs" and/or try to hit racial quotas.
