Being unique or "richly distinct" doesn't make something good

Middle age liberal white women wearing “do whatcha wanna” shirts at Mardi Gras is the absolutely ultimate irony.

But the OT is full of people who have spent a sum total of three days in New Orleans in their lifetime who will respond with "Shithole!"

To be fair, the people that have spent 30 years in NOLA also call it a shithole.

So when you said this board is full of angry grinches it was unrelated to Mardi Gras? Just a random comment?

I used to love going to Mardi Gras and Nee Orleans in general. But with the rampant crime down there these days, I will not be visiting. Doesn’t make me angry or miserable.

That's the problem right there. City used to be awesome. Now interstate shootings are a run of the mill occurrence.

Wanna know a little secret? Nothing online, not Facebook, not tiger, droppings, not Twitter, not any message board, is actually representative of the people at large.

All of them are very small hyper focus groups of people that are outsized in their opinions. No bell curves online, everything is at the extremes.

Agreed. However it’s been falling apart for sometime. Reason why my family left decades ago. It is a great city but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the corruption and soaring crime that has been going on, bc it is worse now than it’s ever been. The stats back that up. And right now it’s just not worth me going there unless I have to. I hope one day it bounces back.

True. But at least you could drive on the interstate without getting shot. The garbage got picked up. OPP was capable of getting defendants to the courthouse.

Agreed. I'd trade that for good public schools and safe neighborhoods in a heartbeat at 45 though

Mardi Gras tonight reminded me how much I love this city. And how much I loathe the people tearing it apart.

While i agree with everything you said above, the harsh reality is that it's too late to save the city. The romance of New Orleans is that it always has been, ultimately, a lost cause.

Anyone who saw Krewe d’etat last night would understand some of the great things about Mardi Gras. The floats were outstanding, taking satirical shots of so many politicians very creative and loads of fun. If you don’t understand New Orleans then you’re probably culturally limited.

Right, it’s been bad for awhile but you could avoid the bad areas just like basically every other city. Now it’s just everywhere. And nothing is being done about it.

Greatest time of my life growing up there. Headed to Endymion today with about 40 people. A great time will be had by all. Great memories.

I took my kids to a parade here in mobile last night. We usually only hit one or 2 a year. They absolutely loved it and we had a great time.
Mobile is way more kid friendly and cleaner.

I love New Orleans Mardi Gras. The wife and I usually go Thursday to Monday. Its different when you are hooked up with people with balconies and houses . I’m not sure I would trap around on Bourbon with the general population anymore. We stick to the warehouse and Garden district mostly.
I’m working this year, so I will miss out. Not real disappointed. It’s cold and windy this year.
I never understood the Mardi Gras hate on here.
