Some of the biggest renewable developers are owned by the oil giants.

As of January 1, 2026, Michigan's motor fuel tax is a flat 52.4 cents per gallon for both gasoline and diesel fuel. The previous 6% state sales tax on fuel was eliminated, with all revenue from the new flat tax now dedicated to road funding.
Louisiana's state gas tax is 20 cents per gallon, a rate that includes 16 cents for the Transportation Trust Fund (DOTD projects) and 4 cents from the older TIMED program, with the total 20.9 cents often cited (including a minor federal adjustment/rounding).
prime example of self-induced outrage.

I am so fricking tired of global warming dumbasses.

BP has a program actively putting in charging stations in gas stations and other major public places. I don’t see that as fighting against the EV market. Castrol has lubricants specially made for EVs, too.

Subsidies from oil is the only reason why EVs exist.

I see things like this and I want to ask them show me where Electricity comes from?

If he really believes this then he has a very fundamental misunderstanding of the US patent system. The entire point is to encourage inventors to publicly disclose their technology (in return for a relatively short term of protection) vs. keeping everything secret. Someone smarter will see the disclosure and figure out a way to improve the technology, often by designing around the patent. Society as a whole benefits from the system. Some would argue that has led to the USA's historical position as a technical powerhouse compared to the rest of the world.
In the documentary I was referring to one of the car manufacturers purchased a patent from a guy that had developed a new battery. He thought it so they could use it in their car manufacturing, but he soon found out they bought it to keep this technology from getting out.
I do see your point though.

You realize Louisiana is just using their high arse sales tax to pay for road projects?
Michigan has it right here. Charge a gas tax that covers road maintenance and quit jacking up other taxes to pay for road projects.

I haven't seen it but I believe that you are accurately restating what they asserted in the documentary. My comments below are not directed at you but rather at the documentary.

Patented technology is already "out" because the technology must necessarily be disclosed to the public fully and accurately for a patent to be legally valid.
The only way to use a patent to stop innovation is for the patent owner to sue somebody that is actually making, using or selling the patented subject matter in the marketplace for patent infringement. I guess the patent could have a chilling effect on someone who wants to pursue the technology. But the way that it usually works is that if the patented invention is that lucrative, then the infringer will make a fortune by commercializing the technology and use that $$ as war chest to hire the best lawyers to attack the patent and fight back against the infringement claims.
My point is that patent law is way more nuanced and involved than what movies and TV suggest. And if the idea is lucrative enough you will never keep it off the market with a patent.

If they actually believe this, they should pull all tax breaks and ev investments from GM, Ford and Stellantis.
My guess is it's a money grab from having a budget deficit.
"As of early 2026, Michigan is addressing a projected
$2 billion budget gap, driven by a structural imbalance, slower revenue growth, and reduced federal funding. The state is navigating significant spending pressures, including potential impacts from federal spending reductions, while attempting to maintain a balanced budget required by law"

I believe it. Why would oil companies not lobby to stay in business and protect their assets? Wouldn't be the first time they have been guilty of this.
Don't really blame the oil companies when renewables have colluded and lobbied on the other side.

Can I sue Michigan for the 1986 Chevy Celebrity?

This is stupid. If alternate energy could provide the energy density at reduced costs to the consumer, there is nothing big oil could have done to stop it.
This is the point that I have always made as well.
Also, if renewables provided a more profitable, energy source than fossil fuels, the traditional energy companies would be cutting each other’s throats to bring it online in mass.
I have heard left claim for 20 years that oil and gas companies are stifling renewable energy. I hope this goes to court, because I want to see the evidence.
