Protecting against sun makes sense to me. There must be more competitive advantaged (re: body heat / dehydration) way to protect against the sun.

Competitive advantage must be weak?

95 degrees in New Orleans and 95 degrees in Nevada do not feel the same for a reason.

Sure. I’m not arguing that humidity isn’t miserable. My point is that the “feels like” concept is utterly ridiculous. 95 degrees with a high dew point feels like 95 degrees with a high dew point.

This “feels like” narrative started about 10 years ago and is part of a larger agenda to sensationalize the weather.

Mexicans on roofs dress in layers, so maybe it's really not so bad!

The world is full of idiots that say humidity makes no difference in how hot it feels. It is an easy experimant if you are in SELA this time of year. Looking at my apps my camp is 76 deg @ 44% right now and my weather station has the outside temp at 77 deg and 83% if you were to walk out the door there you would immediately feel a large difference in the perceived temperature. If you don't, your brain is broken.

Hear your point on sensationalizing the weather. Words like ‘bomb cyclone’ never existed before 24 hour news and weather channels - selling eyeballs for advertising $.

Feels like temp is not new and is relative point. 95-degrees w/high dew point feels very different than 95-degrees w/low dew point.

Beware of bomb cyclone language.

Prepare your day on feels like temp, IMO.

Sounds like an enlisted problem. I want hotel beers in my nasty flight suit.

To be fair though, I always stayed back to give out beers to my crew chief’s. Couldn’t do my job without them.

That is utter BS. In the vein of this thread, we were using the heat index number in the late 80s in the military for training protocols. Whether or not it is used to sensationalize, it is a useful number that is based on reality not some fantasy to support your agenda against another agenda. You are what you hate.

I miss those Florida summers on the flightline wearing fatigues just after a rainstorm and the sun comes beaming back and you had an afternoon sortie. The humidity & swamp arse with the jet engine exhaust was something to behold.

Man, you just brought me back 10 years

After I was married with kids I would sweat it out on days, but my earlier years I spent on mids. Much better in the summer but you could only wrap up so much in the winter.

We would try to tell new guys that winter nights in the wet cold of Florida were no joke, but they’d never believe us until they felt it.

I tell my kids today some of the coldest day/nights of my life were on the Florida panhandle working on the flightline. We had a young airmen pass out in the dorm stairwell and freeze to death. Sounds crazy to most people.

The "dcu" uniform circa late 90s-early 2000s was surprisingly comfortable in the desert heat, especially with the boonie cap. Probably my favorite of all the utility uniforms I've worn.

Every study done in the last 30+ years has shown that covering your body in direct sunlight is safer than not.

Have never understood this idea that letting the sun beat down on your bare arms and legs is cooler than not.

If you really want to thrive in the heat, you need a lightweight, long sleeve moisture wicking shirt and moisture wicking long pants. Also, a good hat.

I did a month rotation at JRTC at Fort Polk during August. It was miserable, but we bought every window unit at Lowe’s and boarded up the windows of a MOUT village and were cool. The heat was unbearable.

They actually aren't that bad. Summer weight.... don't roll the sleeves. I'd rather wear a summer military uniform than a suit and tie any day of the week.

"Ripstop" BDU's is as much of a lie as the name Fort Bliss. Light weight - yes, but they get torn up and shredded faster than the toilet paper in the MREs.

Order and discipline. Sounds stupid, but that’s the answer. “Embracing the suck” is actually valuable mentality for servicemen to have.

Military folks also tend to be in better shape physically and are probably more acclimated to physical activity outdoors in the elements than most of us. I don't doubt they "feel" the heat its just not that big a deal for them. I suspect when it does hinder their ability to do their job management steps in and takes steps to mitigate the impact. The military, for all outward appearances, seems to do what it does pretty effectively.

I would posit that when a helmet AC stops working they have one on the sideline and fix it immediately. It is an advantage as long as it is working, when and if it stops all of a sudden you are worse off with having had it than without it altogether. A lot of the jobs in the military do not have the luxury of running to the sideline to get your AC fixed because some bastard is shooting at you. A football game is 3 hours long....a military person may be on a post that they can't leave lest someone kill a bunch of people...

Now add a bulletproof vest, gun belt, M9, and stand watch for 5 hours port side of a Destroyer in Jacksonville, FL from 1200-1700 in July. Many boys became men standing that watch.

This right here. I'll keep my zipper suit and push my sleeves past my elbow during the hot days!

And there's always beer ready for the crew chiefs

Sure. Now get your chucks on and be in formation in the middle of August at 1000 for a change of command that starts at 1400.
