Others have asked the tax question ... you do realize that when you trade in, your sales tax is based on the differential after deducting the value of the trade in. This was not always the case in Louisiana -- and went into effect I think about 3 years ago ... point being you paid the full sales tax on the new car (9% in EBR I think). So we all hope you did those calculations before making your decision.
Or does it only provide tax relief if you “trade-in” your vehicle and not if you “sell” to another dealership (Carmax)?

This has been my experience too. In the OPs case, I guess the dealership wasn't interested in the trade-in for some reason. It has been a couple of years, but dealerships were begging for our last trade-in because of the inflated used car market.

Carmex offered me 7k less than dealer the only time I went to one.
Just sayin

Bought and sold a few vehicles with Carmax.
Not always the best deal in town, but they eliminate all the garbage I hate about going to a dealership - so worth it to me.

I wouldn’t report it. Taxes were paid when he bought the car.

I sold a car to CarMax two weeks ago. The day before I downloaded all the documents (title, Drivers license, registration) on their portal. Made an appointment for the next morning at 10:30. Showed up, they checked the VIN on the car, I signed a bunch of papers, they handed me a check, called me a Lyft to get back home. Whole process took 15-20 minutes. Couldn’t have asked for an easier transaction.
Plus the girl that helped me was a part Hispanic chick that was very easy on the eyes.

I tried to sell my car to Carmax, didn’t like their offer and sold it private party for 9k more. Glad it was a better deal for you.

I spread my cheeks raw and masterbate in a carmax bathroom once

Carmax worked well for me the one time I used them. The only weird experience I had is the car I wanted to buy they would not ship.
The positive was that I was shopping online and every dealer I called wanted to tack on $7-10k over their online price on top of the $45-50K car. Carmax held true to the online price. I and my kid flew out to Florida on a Saturday morning, test drove it, wrote my check and in less than 75 minutes we started driving home.

Car dealerships have one of the largest political lobbying associations for a reason. They are scum. They block direct to consumer sales in many states. They are anti-capitalist in that regard.
I bought a used car from HERTZ. Very happy with the experience overall. No haggle, and essentially you rent for 72 hours to test drive.

There car prices are high. I would sell a vehicle to them but likely would never buy from them.

I've done this with both Carvana and Carmax in Houston with the same experience but the other way around. I sold the vehicle then went into the dealer with a big down payment.
I don't trade in anymore. Not worth the hassle and they screw you. It's just another point to haggle over with the dealer when those institutions offer better money and the price is set when you walk in the door.

This
You pay sales tax on purchase price instead of purchase price minus trade in value

What was the impact of taxes?
Typically you will not get tax credit because you didn’t trade. For example, if you were buying a $50,000 vehicle, you’d pay taxes on the purchase price. But, if you have a trade registered in same state where you will register new vehicle, and your trade value is $20,000, you’d only pay taxes on the balance, or $30,000…

Ended up purchasing a car from a dealer and driving over to Carmax and selling our trade-in.
This is not a trade-in. It’s two separate transactions. As such you will not get a tax credit for your old car and you will have to pay full sales tax on the car you purchased (if in LA).

In your scenario, if he sold the car for $20k to a private seller instead of a trade, what taxes does he owe?

Full tax rate on the $50,000 car he purchased. Will vary by city/stare.
